Pioneer #17 Jerry Titus build....

Postby Cosmic Bilby » Sun Oct 28, 2012 6:08 pm

G'day Guys,

All this beautiful talk about the upcoming Pioneer '68 Camaro release has got me enthused so I thought I'd tune my #17 Jerry Titus Ford Mustang.

I checked it out last night, out of the box it is a great runner, its got 192 grams of downforce (nett) and the motor does 9600RPM at the rear wheels, which is better than the first one of these I tuned, it must've been a bit of a dud (8200RPM). After water dipping I expect 9600RPM to get me somewhere in the ballpark in comparison to the Scaley T/A cars we have (plus the '67 notchback looks way, way cooler!).

Ive got some PG XPG's to put on the back of this car, other than the tyres the model will remain stock.

Guys, are there any tips that you can think of that are specific to Pioneer cars?

Cheers,

Rupert.

P.S. Have been looking through Cars on Line recently for US iron, found a '67 Titus "tribute" car, lovely, so was the 50K price tag, bit more than I want to spend at the moment, will content myself with the 1/32 scale version for awhile :)

I've converted mine to the B-NOVA guide setup, but see how you go with the stock guide first. Running magnet is generally a whole different thing.

....Excellent,

I havent had anything to do with the B-Nova set-up, have heard H mention them, will have to look into them, also for the Carrera stockers...

Thanks mate,

Rupert.

Swap the 12T pinion for the alternate 13T pinion. These are included in the latest cars as a spare in the poly bag. With this pinion fitted your car will kick serious Scaly butt. Otherwise run a 13T 7.5mm NSR anglewinder gear with a 36T 19mm slotit spur.

Buff front tyres down to about 18.5mm to drop the front end. Looks silly but is necessary if you competition race the car.

cheers

Thanks for that Guys,

I was wondering what I'd have to cut the fronts down to, they are pretty meaty!!!

Cheers,

Rupert.

...Got it done finally....

Wow, I am genuinely impressed, this is the first Pioneer I've tuned with all the little tuning tricks I've learnt over the years.

It was a stock tune apart from PGT XPG's on the tail and Scalextric Sport metal bearings on the front axle (the stock plastic ones on this particular car were a bit ordinary).

The guide isn't ideal either but as far as I can see its no worse than the Scaley/SCX/Carerra ones I generally work with....

....The motor turned out well, 9600RPM before its bath, 10600RPM after dipping, nice power, seemed to have good torque as well.

Proof of the pudding was on the track, the Pioneer 'Stang turned in 2.0 seconds which puts it at the top of the pack, from memory the only T/A cars I've got to go under the two second mark (1.9) have been a '70 Scaley Mustang and a yellow street livery Boss 302 Scaley Mustang, at the time I thought both were a bit freaky, the latter has since departed on EBay and the former needs a bit of TLC (a very, very abused and neglected model now) :)

Can't wait for the '68 Camaro from Pioneer, I think they will be great.....

G'day Bloke!

Buddy, I'll put up a post in The "Slot Car Garage" section of the forum under "Water Dipping"....

....Its dead easy and works a treat, plus I'd hope others will chip into the thread because there are subtle variations of the procedure :)

Whether the 12T or the 13T is preferable depends upon your track. I tried out the 13T but went back to the 12T. The straights weren't long enough to get the advantage from extra high end and I lost that low end that had me killing the Scaleys out of the corners.

Sanding down the front tyres is important. You can put super glue on the treads too if you want. The main thing is that they are not grippy and the guide sits well down into the slot. The B-NOVA guide set up has the advantage of taking out slop. With magnets this might not be so noticeable.
