What is your favorite Pinion Puller/Press?

Postby goosenapper » Tue Jun 11, 2013 8:26 am

I had been using a Ninco (80201) pinion press and puller, primarily because it's a cheap all-in-one tool. It lasted about a year, and today both the puller and presser went wonky. Pinions are now getting stuck on the puller, forcing me to pry them off with a flat-head screwdriver. The presser began getting tight this morning, then it finally completely seized up after pressing pinions on two motors. I can't get it to move a lick.

So, that means that I am once more the market for a good puller and presser. The Ninco one would probably work great if all I used were plastic pinions, but I almost exclusively use Slot.it's now. Is the Slot.it puller/presser worth the money? It's not cheap, but having now gone through one of these things dying on me, I want something that will last. Are there other options out there that you folks swear by? Thanks in advance for the help.

I like the looks of the slot-it press but its over my price.

I am planning to build a new style press this summer but I do not have time due to chassis orders and Razor's

I use the exact same pair or tools that Harry does. I have the plastic POS from Scaley, the clumsy and limited use Ninco, and Jon's, as well as some other nondescript tools that are carryovers from other things, but I use the two Hudy's all the time.

I recently purchased one of the Slot.It Gear Puller / Presses.

Prior to purchasing it I continued to come up with reason upon reason for NOT spending $59.95 to have one.

After purchasing one and using it, I now come up with all sorts of reasons to buy one.

I have several pullers and presses sitting around the shop. They have pretty much started gathering dust. I simply love using the Slot.It device.

The final straw that set me off to obtain one was pressing a gear on a motor one day. By the time I realized the spacer on the back of of the motor was NOT as tight as it should have been on the shaft of the motor, I had a lot of 'play' in the motor. The rear spacer inside the motor is up against the windings now. Oh, I can repair it and I will, but I was just pressing a gear on.

I tried to duplicate the problem with the Slot.It press and it would not have happened if I had used the Slot.It press. No I won't identify the other manufacturer's press. I will say that the Slot.It press is just AWESOME. I love mine and am glad I spent the money to have one.

Just a quick question in closing. How many times have you had to 'pry' the gear off of the shaft of your gear puller? I do not have to do that any more.

Bibbster,

On the Slot.It press, there are 3 different sized 'pinion holders'. You simply find the one that is correct for the size gear you are using. The gear sits in the recess and does not fall out as most of the other presses I have used. It is so frustrating to watch the pinion head to the floor and upon contact accelerate at warp speed off to the blackholes of space, never to be found ever again.

Like I said, I've used many different presses, but I find the Slot.It unit is a well thought out, well engineered and implemented design. It makes me smile!

They are here.

Good info on the Slot.it press.

Thanks for posting those photos and giving a run-through on what each piece is for.

My mind is made up now. I'll dive in on the Slot.it tool. It looks to be good quality with real thought behind it.

It's a little hard to get over dropping that kind of money on a serious tool that is explicitly designed to work on toys, but hey, I've spent more money on things that ultimately proved to be less useful to me!

Probably kind of hard to get any return on the investment only selling a few hundred units?

I'm sure Slot.It has a large market worldwide.

Using this tool reminds me of my homemade 6 ton press I had in my garage shop. It came in very handy when something did not want to move. I could move it easily. It was shaped very much like this unit. It was a good tool that could do just about anything you could come up with.

The $60.00 is not that bad considering what you're getting. Like I said, I kept coming up with reason for NOT buying one. The biggest one was the price. But after owning one and using it repeatedly, I realize how wrong I was. Like any quality tool, it makes our job much easier.
