Harry,

Sorry, but I can't let you and Bibbster have ALL the FUN!

That Porsche has been on hold for far too long. I am looking forward to giving it a run this Friday. I'm hoping that ModlerBob has trouble keeping up with it.

Another project on the workbench follows along - pretty much - with your article on the Porsche 956 that you set up for running on wood.

I chose to re-motor it, put some wider tires on the rear and I'll see what happens. Hey, it's all FUN!

More tomorrow or the next day.

Marty,

Looks good but we need a picture of the completed car and an explanation of how you got the wheels to look the same. Did you turn down the old wheels and use them as inserts? Inquiring minds want to know.

Once the correct wheel inserts arrive, I'll be posting more photos.

Already planned. USPS can be blamed for delays?!

I have some of those cars, but have never done anything with them. Maybe this will give me some inspiration. :)

Nice work, Florida_Slotter. I too have a Fly that could use a serious “going over” just like you have done. Fly slot cars are very nice model recreations and deserve to see more track time and not just sit on a shelf. I believe it is time for me to call on SCC and get a little expert advice for one of my favorite Fly’s that just begs for some attention. Thanks for your inspirational tutorial, Florida_Slotter, proving once again you’re quite the guru yourself.

TorqueMutant,

My friend, you are all too complimentary. I'm still learning all about this 1/32nd scale cars. Lots of things to learn, but learning I am. At this point, I still consider myself at the 'gorilla' level as brute force is sometimes used to achieve the goals I am looking for. People like Dickie just kind of put it all together and it works so well from the get go.

Today is my day for a trip to "Da' Glen" . . . . DeBary Glen that is where we have two tracks set up - one is a Scalextric Sport track that is 64 feet per lap and the other a 65 foot routed MDF track. You can run your cars on either one, but the setup is completely different.

I find that having this type of arrangment is helping me learn what does and what does not work on both types of racing surfaces. Interestingly some cars that are simply awful on the plastic are almost awesome on the wood as well as vice versa. So it's time to learn, learn some more and tune or build cars for either of the tracks.

When I get done testing today - remember I have a couple of cars that I have built this week that need testing. Not only the Fly, but also my Slot.It Sauber Mercedes that I set up to run on wood. Now I must say something, but will emphatically deny it if asked to me by anyone . . . . I am really liking the routed track. It does take a lot of finger talent to run that track quickly. But then to really put down a fast lap on the plastic track you must really keep the car on the edge - I've been known to hold my breath for about 4 laps over there - to put the time on the clock that you are looking for. Bottom line is that I will be reporting the results of all my testing later this weekend.

However if you point that Dodge south on I-95 you can join us for some FUN today!

Take care and have a fantastic day!

What an absolutely awesome day of testing.

I had almost too many things to check out. Most of the projects worked very well. Some worked even better.

Mr. Dickie Pearson . . . . I would like to take this opportunity to say "Thank You" for all your input on this particular build. I very wisely, as it turns out, did all that you suggested and even though the wheel inserts did not arrive in time - not from SCC, but another vendor - the Fly was truly transformed.

The 18,000 rpm H&R Hawk motor is just splendid on our MDF track at our club. It has a lot of low end power and the car literally 'explodes' off the turn. With the chassis setup as you suggested, the forward bite coming off a turn let's you harness all of that available 'punch' and get a head start on the competition. Basically you can lengthed the straights by being able to accelerate quicker as you are exiting the turn. I was running against a car with the 21,500 rpm orange end bell motor. At the end of the straight we were neck and neck going into the next turn. So I was able to get the jump on him as we exited the turn leading into the straight.

With the chassis made into a one piece assembly like you suggested, the car is very predictable in the turns. If you add a bit of throttle, the car will slide out a bit - very proportional to the amount of throttle. It's a whole lot of fun to drive in a spirited manner.

All I can say is the car is so much FUN to drive now, I am totally enjoying this car.

What a magnificent difference from the way it was! Almost no comparison.

RMinAustrailia has this as his signatory line: "FlySlot........making slot tuners out of slot enthusiasts for oh so many years now."

I fully understand what he is talking about . . . . . now.

I may have given you some tips Marty, but it's your work that made the car run as well as it does, sooo... good job

Now, don't forget pics of the finished piece :D
