Who makes the solid axles with the flat section milled into the ends to allow for good wheel grub screw bite? I have one, but I can't seem to recall where I got it...............

I had some in a Fly kit. Have never seen them available separately; but that is not to say that they are not.

You can make your own Allen just use a Dremel tool to make your own flat spot's.

be easy to make your own with a dremel and a cut-off wheel, use the side of the wheel dont take much, you could even hold it in your axle in your Tire Razor not spinning of coarse :lol:

dont press very hard when side wheel grinding :naughty:

If you have a bench grinder or belt sander that would work :text-bravo:

Yep agree with Chris.
I have seen some axles with flat spots which are I set from the ends so the wheel even if slightly loose will not come off. But just spin freely on the axle.
I hate searching for wheels in the scenery.

I agree. That's the safest and best method.

In the old days, we held the axle in Vice-Grips and rubbed on a bastard file. We were really only roughing it up a little rather than making a true flat.

You pay royally for an axle with flats. I make my own using Dremel cutoff disks. If you make your own flats, you get them where you want them for custom axle lengths. Also, all the flats won't have to be in a straight line, in case you're into balancing tires by rotating the placement of the rear tire & gear set screws. If you do grind with any cutoff disk, you're not supposed to grind on the disk sides, yet we all do, but you open yourself up to the disk exploding when you do. A better solution is to stack 2 or 3 disks on the arbor at the same time & use their edges. There were, maybe still are, bigger & stronger cutoff disks reinforced with fiberglass strands.

I think my big disks bought years ago were "Great Planes" brand from Tower Hobbies in IL. I've seen others over the years since.

Grub screw wheel bite? I have not had any real problems but one has to look at what can or cannot "bite". If the end of the grub screw is flat no amount of tightening will make much difference.

I have on one occasion cut the end off a grub screw and inserted it backwards into the wheel/gear. That way it will bite on the annular edge of the hex hole.

:idea: I suppose another way would be to grind a point on the grub screw.
