You pay royally for an axle with flats. I make my own using Dremel cutoff disks. If you make your own flats, you get them where you want them for custom axle lengths. Also, all the flats won't have to be in a straight line, in case you're into balancing tires by rotating the placement of the rear tire & gear set screws. If you do grind with any cutoff disk, you're not supposed to grind on the disk sides, yet we all do, but you open yourself up to the disk exploding when you do. A better solution is to stack 2 or 3 disks on the arbor at the same time & use their edges. There were, maybe still are, bigger & stronger cutoff disks reinforced with fiberglass strands.
