MRRC modified for Strombecker

Postby oz10k » Sun Jul 19, 2015 2:24 pm

I like vintage cars and I like to tinker. I've got a good number of old Strombecker cars and had been thinking for a while about chassis options. But every time I had an idea I ran into a roadblock, as I wanted to be able to use the existing body mounting posts.

Finally I ran across an old MRRC brass chassis that looked like it would work:

My first thought was to fit this inside a Strombecker chassis. So I took one and started cutting:

And it seemed pretty promising:

But I ran into two problems. First, I couldn't find a good way to connect the two chassis. Second, with a motor installed I had a clearance problem and I didn't want to hack the body to resolve it. So the project got tabled for a while.

Finally I decided to add some pans to the chassis for mounting. And having several bodies I found one that didn't have the clearance issue. In the front of the MRRC chassis I did have to expand the existing hole to a slot in order to get everything to line-up:

Now just a few minor details to wrap-up, then I need to work on the body:

Nice! One of my favorite pass times in this hobby, is getting old stromies up and running with more modern running gear.
Nice job!

I agree, the Strom bodies are pretty cool and with a little work can be made to look very nice.

I like the MMRC Clubman conversion. That's a decent chassis and with some pans you should have a nice running car. I have seen that plastic Strom chassis set with some brass tube for rear axle carrier/bushings, and those cars run pretty well too.

Nicely done.

Very slick conversion. Sadly those Clubmans are getting harder to find.
