Finally I ran across an old MRRC brass chassis that looked like it would work:


My first thought was to fit this inside a Strombecker chassis. So I took one and started cutting:


And it seemed pretty promising:


But I ran into two problems. First, I couldn't find a good way to connect the two chassis. Second, with a motor installed I had a clearance problem and I didn't want to hack the body to resolve it. So the project got tabled for a while.
Finally I decided to add some pans to the chassis for mounting. And having several bodies I found one that didn't have the clearance issue. In the front of the MRRC chassis I did have to expand the existing hole to a slot in order to get everything to line-up:


Now just a few minor details to wrap-up, then I need to work on the body:
