Slo Mo video update to '33 Modified with guide behind axle

Postby turbokev » Fri Feb 20, 2015 7:35 pm

I got my parts in and installed the guide in my '33 Modified this afternoon..

I know several people were wondering how this hybrid approach would work, and how
the car would behave with the guide just behind the front axle..

Well, the install looks clean.. the wires are pretty well concealed. As for performance?
The car is fast and stable in the corners.. definitely a higher cornering speed than with guide out front.
There is little tail out sliding.. this is not a 'drifting through the corners' kind of car with this setup.

On the oval, it is 2 tenths quicker than the lower, wider Whelen type mods I have with the laminated paper bodies.
(This mod has the same engine, same gearing, but slightly skinnier tires)

Now that said, the car still needs to be driven. If you are too hot in to the corner it will roll up out of the slot,
but it takes a significant speed for that to happen. The Whelen type mods are maybe just a bit easier to drive at
the limit lap after lap, but this certainly was not difficult. Just a little bit of a learning curve and it was
ripping off very fast, very controlled laps.

I'm setting up my other old school Modifieds with this same setup.. D3D front carrier and guide just behind the axle.

It Kind of makes sense to me. If your tripod is right, the car should just experience a technically shorter wheel base right?
Fascinating that it preforms so well! but glad to hear it.

To put the guide behind the front axle, usually the front wheels should be independent (not a shared axle).

Kev, Try using Future to coat the tires. It has less shine and does not have that hard rattle sound they sometimes get. Been testing this for almost a year and it makes a nice zero grip.

Zero grip accomplishes the same thing. I never have figured it out, but guys have proven it to me. In front of the axle seems to have very little effect, but behind the axle matters. I always wanted the guide hidden behind the axle, and sure enough, when pressed to move it forward, I moved it, and the car ran many times better. I tried it with independent axles and it didn't matter where the guide was. I know that guys in HO are adamant that an independent front end is mandatory for performance.

D3D front carrier and guide just behind the axle.

I'm lovin' it!
We all have our little things that drive us CRAZY for me it seeing the guide flag sticking out in front of the car.
You took care of that & it's drivable too.
You'll be see it on my next build.

Thanks for sharing ... J Y D

Kev.. car looks great . I have to get building to keep up with you guys . These mods are a blast to build cant wait to build the short track to race them onDoes the guide placed there effect the turning radius of the car by being located in that spot. One more thing where do you get the driver figures that look like that

Hi Tony,

The turning radius is what it is.. The distance from the guide post to the rear axle centerline is the same as this Monogram.

Image

But it's shorter than say a Scalextric Cougar.. so you could set it for whatever you like and locate the front axle just ahead of that point I guess.
I certainly like the look of the hidden guide.. and if all my vintage mods are set up the same it's an even playing field anyways~

I had a chance to drive this car on two different road courses today, and I will say this.. the shorter setup is a little
more challenging to drive hard with back and forth directional changes... but it rocks on the oval.
Getting it settled down in to the turn and accelerating out on to the straight works fantastic, but the quick little back
and forths upset it a bit and it would get a little tippy.

I'm not changing a thing though as it will be raced on the oval 99% of the time.. My red sedan modified will get the
same setup and I expect it will work great on the oval too..

The driver guy for this car is actually a Carrera vintage NASCAR driver.. it's from the Petty Torino.
I like the look of these drivers too..

Its good to hear it works for you. I don't do tripod setups at all, so this is particularly interesting to me.
