I would like to start a thread on Motor info for us uninformed home track car builders.
In the search for the perfect or near perfect motors for my scratch built cars, I found that unless you are willing to shell out a bunch of money for comparison,We should have a comparison chart,or info thread for the layperson that does not know what a FF350-HP-???? Whatever is! I took the easy route and just called Harry! He is wealth of knowledge on this subject, and was VERY helpful. But to keep his phone line from being burned up,we should have a thread that could be built up from all the motor players from the older experts with experience,to the people on here that actually have developed motors, and sell them.I know that we all have different needs in motors, but just having a basic knowledge of what compares to what would be helpful. Some things i have found out,are that RPM is not always the determining factor for a class choice, sometimes torque is needed, without a lot of speed. (short curvy tracks)
Some of the things i have run into building up a classic series of road course cars, are that a long wheelbase skinny tired car, might require a different motor than say a short wheelbase, wider track car with fatter tires to run equally on the same course. But what motor would that be? if an MT-1 Was not quite it,would the H&R Jackrabbit be the fix?,or do you hunt for an NC-1?. If your favorite dealer is out of a particular motor, and there is another equivalent, what would it be?
These are all simple questions to those in the know, but a costly proposition for those that dont!, Im not trying to get out of paying my dues so to speak, but rather use this group knowledge and experience like Harry had intended it to be.
