First I would lower the banks to maybe three and two inches. Also use 2x4 wedges maybe six to eight inches long instead of a straight piece to get your bank. Then put like a one and half inch high wedge on the sides. Then you can drill thru and put your screws in.
Did you route some grooves on the back side to help with the bending? Maybe that too. :D
