Small drill press?

I need to get one to drill precise holes in plastic (up to 3mm thick) and brass (probably 0.040 naval brass, mostly). Precision is the most important point for me.

There are better mills than the Proxon for less money. Check out Micro-Mark's offerings.

I don't know if they are still available, but my milling machine is from Harbor Freight, and was the identical machine to the MicroMark mill, for much less. I was very worried about quality from HB, but I checked it very thoroughly when I was setting it up, and found no flaws at all. But watch out for any of them anyway. The Chinese manufacturers change quickly, and the Chinese make all of them, unless you restore an old mini mill from a US, UK, or German outfit.

Ok guys. Remember I have shipping to deal with. I love some of the MicroMark stuff, but I'd nearly find it cheaper to pick it up in person than ship it.

My friend on the North Island of NZ had me buy him an RC airplane and take delivery, then mail it to him myself. You may want to research that and see what you find. He saved over $100US.

Depending on the work you're going to do there is a pretty thriving market for older Unimat lathe/milling machines. I just picked one up in trade. They convert from lathe to: mill; drill press; bench grinder; jigsaw; circular saw. There are several companies that support them parts wise and tooling is easy to come by. If you are just doing hobby work on slots, or trains, or other small projects they will work just fine for those applications. I would not try and use a drill press to do even light milling. The bearings won't handle the load, and you'll ruin your chuck. Not to mention your work quality will be for S**T!

Well, yeah. Obviously, using a drill press for milling is only for plastics and the like.

That Micro mark looks pretty good, but if you need another option, I have this in the For sale section.

It's pretty much a high precision Dremel machine, you can get a drill press accessory for it. (that's almost the only option I did not get)

I realize it's on the pricey side, BUT it's So much more then a small drill press!!
