Scalextric White Cougar Project

Postby turbokev » Wed Jun 11, 2014 7:19 am

I love old Cougars.. (settle down..I'm talking about the cars)

Picked this one up from the Chicago Land Hobbies sale for $20 dollars..

Image

Going to make a Trans Am type fantasy road racer out of it..

Testing out of the box revealed one badly out of round wheel (not tire..wheel) but I plan to change to the
'good stuff' from SCC anyways..

First.. took it all apart..

Image

Next, I cut the front and rear valances off the chassis, sanded the body mounts on the chassis, and trimmed
the chassis all the way around so it will clear the body in every direction..

Image

Next up.. taking the factory wiring an guide out and installing a Bnova adapter and slot.it guide..

Image

The interior bucket is very deep on this car and I wanted no interference.. so that got sripped bare..

Image

I cut a large portion of the bucket out, added some sheet styrene and mocked up a rally co-driver guy from a SCX MG..
(I cut the map out of his hands.. look a little odd but it was the only extra 'helmet guy' I had LOL)

Image

A little paint.. a little goatee for the driver.. and it's looking better..

Image

Quick test fit in the car..

Image

I took a dremel to the wheel well openings.. Notice there is no body line there anymore.. The openings are
slightly larger so I can drop the body down a bit for a better stance..

Image

Last night I shot it with some Testors rattle can green..

Image

Image

That's where I'm at.. Need to paint up some wheel inserts, add details and decals, and wire up the motor..

EXCELLENT post !!
$20 ...you can't beat that with a stick !!
The motors sell for about $1o each. And the color is sharp.
We have a guy that races on plastic with his Cougar here in Buffalo and it is FAST !
Maybe to fast for him. I call his car "The Flying Cougar" because it's all over the place.
Did you strip the white paint off before you painted it green ? TY

Thanks.. no stripping of the paint.. Just lightly scuffed the whole thing, washed it and shot the paint, 1 coat.

Not sure yet if I'm going to use an accent color, or just keep it plain and simple as a 'team mate' to this Avanti I'm rebuilding..
That's the way I'm leaning right now..

Kev, I'm using a similar shade of metallic green on a UFO (un finished object) from my pile, and I used a silver undercoat. I got those white lines where the paint ran off just like your green base coat. What do you do to get complete coverage for the finish coat?

That's what I thought I was doing, but I must have gotten too heavy. Thanks, Dave.

Had some free time this morning to work on the Cougar..

I painted the silver trim, installed the interior and glass, and added some decals..

Still need to paint some wheel inserts and install the front bumper, but it's getting there~

That's the great thing about a 'fantasy livery' lol.. You can make any combo you want~

If these Pioneer decals were not so fragile, I would have cut them to make the driver name FAT AL

Cougar came to a griding halt this morning.. when I realized I didn't have anymore slot.it 19mm sidewinder gears..
Placed an order with SCC for that and some wheels for my next project (ASA Camaro)

Here's the completed body.. the bumpers and grill are in and detailed, the rest of the silver trim is done,
the directionals and reverse lights are touched up and the taill lights and headlighta are reinstalled.

Finished up the Cougar this morning.. I need some front tires with a little less diameter, sits up a bit..
But I'm happy with the end result.. Certainly looks racey to me :D

That looks AWESOME!!!
As a big fan of the Cougar body style - I love seeing "new" versions of these painted up! :D

Looking at the drivetrain - what did you use for a spur gear to keep the wheels in tight?
(I am looking to mod one of mine for a new non-mag class that is starting at the local track that limits the tire width to the factory specs)
Again - SHARP looking ride! :D
