You ever get going on a project and think you are doing ok.. then realize you are an idiot?

Well that would be me..

I finally had free time to work on the Porsche this weekend. I got the window flashing all
trimmed out without breaking anything. I got the little wooden spoiler extension on and
shaped in. I filled some of the holes and smoothed some of the voids over (this was my
first time ever using putty) and I found the closest possible match to the red paint I could.
It's not fire truck red.. it's darker, but not maroon.. I found it at Lowes. Don't laugh.
It's "Rustoleum Dark Red" LOL..

I primed the body this morning, let it dry for a couple hours then hit with the red.
Some dust, but overall, the color is exactly what I wanted and the car looks good.

Hours pass.. car is dry, and I'm sitting here looking at it deciding if I want to decal it tonight
when suddenly it hits me... I DIDN'T MAKE THE FOG LIGHT HOLES.

Image

I'll try tomorrow.. dreading the whole time that I'll completely mess up the nose.

Wish me luck !!

@Kev if you didn't make the fog light holes - whew you are in luck! They are actually brake duct holes, but I guess could be used for fog lights too. Heck, I didn't even drill mine all the way through... Drill them in and repaint rhe front. MoF my repaint worked out for the better! Glad you got a good red to match

Lol that gif is funny!

I'm letting the clear dry for days and harden up

About body mounts, in typ Porsche racing fashion, some light weight wood will come in play here. I was thinking either 0.25" round wood dowel epoxy or JB welded to the body. Will this work or should I use plastic?

I'm not particular about the material to screw into, I'm worried that the front mount is directly under the thinnest most delicate spot on the whole body. Tomorrow I'll try to see if I can bridge a mount from side to side. I'm combining the rear mount and the exhaust mount with a wood platform made from a paint stirring stick from the hardware store.

The body is so good looking, it fools you into thinking the resin work is not going to take a lot to finish up. But beware. There's more to do than it looks as Jeremy says, and you need the time to get it done right.

Personally I didn't think there was much to do on it. Few places and the rest just make it look like it just finished The 12 Hrs of Sebring. And it's all good. :D

A little bit like this.

Yours must have been a lot thicker than mine. And straighter. I still have a warp/twist I can't get rid of. But the body looks so good, the finish so smooth, I really like it no matter what. Today, I figured out an elaborate wood cross beam to keep the front mount from destroying the paper thin hood. Its going to work out fine. I was worried.

Thanks JB, I'll read over on the Pit Row.

â—‹ Guide - is it wobbly? Does it extend into the slot as far as possible?
What is a preferred guide set up? It isn't that loose side to side. It does move up and down in the chassis.

â—‹ Front axle - is it square to the rear axle? Is it wobbly? Do the tires just skim the track surface?
I will check the alignment with calipers. Yes, front axle just clicked into the chassis is wobbly up and down alot. I used all six plastic bushings on for spacing (3 each side) I this prefered or not?
Should the front tires just skim the track or be part of the handling setup?

â—‹ Motor - Is it secured into place? (I like to use hot glue down each side)
Ok, can do this, just need to find where my pesky hot glue gun went, currently MIA after my hobby shop new work table redo. I do have the base and cord...

â—‹ Rear Axle - Does it spin freely in the bushings?
â—‹ Rear Bushings - Are they secured into place? (I use a small drop of CA in the bottom of the carrier, and hot glue across the top)

Yes, now the rear axle is smooth. When I first assembled the rear axle, crown gear and bushings, snapped it into the chassis, there was a definate bind. No doubt due to the plastic chassis mould not behaving with the alignment. Simple rat tail file and xacto blade cleaning up the chassis fixed it. Yup, bushings are CA glued in and once I find that darn pesky hot glue gun, will cover the tops.

â—‹ Pinion/Crown Gears - Do they mesh properly? Is there excess side-to-side play?
Seems to be good to go, the little extra motor shaft that fits into the crown gear slot seems good, no binding.

â—‹ Tires - Are they true and glued to the wheels?
Need to sand down the front tires a good bit to fit my 'stance' RSR look and fit under the body w/o rubbing. Have to sand the rears only a tick. not sure how to do this other than mounting the front wheels and tires to the rear axle and making a bunch of black dust. I'm assuming they should be glued with clear nail polish before truing.

Any chance of renting your spare Tire Truing razor? Need more decals? :teasing-blah:

Cheers, your freindly Porsche RSR geek Thompson

After all this, I feel like I know you, Thompson. I can just hear you saying all that. One thing I'll tell you from the pictures (you have a great camera), those black screws are not going to hold very long in wood. The thread is far too fine and the effect is that they are a drill, not a screw. There should be some silver screws in the pack with a much more aggressive, larger thread.

Also, for tuning, a little polishing compound on the gears and a 3 minute run-in with a little resistance will make them smooth as silk.
