1/24 Toyota kit build

Another cheap build ready for tonight's racing action. I still have to paint the driver. I picked up this kit on Amazon for about $12 because I was trying to get to the free shipping level on some other purchases.

It was a very easy build. The tires are quite soft too, although not round. They needed a lot of sanding. I attached a magnet directly between the rear tires and it scoots along pretty decent. I got the front tires slightly too high and then seem to skip across the track instead of turning all the time. Going to run some timed laps and see how it does.

If I can keep up with those Carrera 917's I will be very happy with this little Toyota.

Looks good. Sounds like the fronts are almost set perfect for a good tripod effect to me. Let us know how it goes.

The model is a motorized kit. All I did was snap a Carrera evolution motor in the slot. The gears and axles are all from the kit. I just added a guide flag. The motorized kits come with a half height interior and the digital chip fits in where the battery goes. I added a brass bushing for the axle as it had a lot of slop. The chassis snaps in and out quite neat. The only issue is the car is so light so I had to add magnets to get the tires to grip.

I have been buying these kits up whenever I can get one cheap. I use parts from a D132 car and make a D124 car out of it. I have 4 more to make right now. I will post pics as I get them done.

It is a lot less work than using regular model kits, although I still have a few of them to do up also.

Molded in color, but you have to apply the decals.

Here is the bottom of the car. You can see where I cut a hole to glue in a guide assembly and I attached a magnet. I also reinforced the area with the guide with a couple of scrap plastic rods since it was weak and flexed after I cut a hole in it.

Here is the inside of the car. The motor snapped right in. You can see how the chassis is snapped in and out by the little tabs.

I painted it, although the plastic was about the same color anyhow. The decals were a pain because the letters kept coming apart and I had to position a couple of them one letter at a time. It really is overall a very easy build and I plan on scouting out a few more like it.

Not sure about the motor behind the rear axle concept?? Makes for a chassis with a big polar moment and a car that wont like changing direction quickly. Tell us how it goes.

cheers

Well an hour before race time and I lost it over the table edge, shattering a wheel upon impact with the floor. I scratched up some decals too, even though they were coated with floor polish. I did some research on this car and it had bad breakdown problems in the 1:1 scale car. I did manage to get in the 9 second range, which is on par for the slower cars we run. The Carrera 917 cars are running low 7's. I had hopes for this thing, but I guess I will just have to park it for this week and find some replacement wheels.

It just sort of lunged over the hill section and kept going, clean over the border I use to keep cars on the table. I built it on Wednesday and trashed it on Thursday. Got to be a new record.

And the motor behind the axle does give it a lot of weight hanging off the back. Not the optimal set-up for sure. Good for drifting, but not so much racing. I think a lot of the 1/24 cars I buy are very loose in the back, and this one seems about the same.

I'm sorry for your loss. That must have been devastating. With the front end on that Toyota, I was really looking forward to seeing this car scoop up those pesky 917's. Was it a standard 3/32" rear axle, or something oddball? Post or send me a shot of the wheels and I'll keep an eye out for something similar.

Sorry for the quick trip to the garage, looking forward to the resurection. I really like my Carrera D124 cars and looking forward to some scratch builds. How did that 14v motor handle the 18v? did you lower the max performance through the chip?
