NZ Red Dawson Camaro - FINALLY FINISHED

Postby Reslotted » Tue Feb 18, 2014 7:54 pm

I know that I've still got to finish The RMS Firebird, Mad Max Falcon and Bob Jane Camaro.
But I'm waiting on some bits which should all arrive at the same time and I don't want to be caught in the Embarrassing situation where I don't actually have a project on the go once they are finished.

So I've started ordering the stuff I need for my next project -

The Red Dawson Camaro from the '72 -'74 New Zealand Touring Car championship.
I've had to knock up my own Decals for this one so that's done and in the computer (although I'll probably use Pattos for the bonnet stripes), Paint will be contessa gold all on a plain white Scaley Camaro.

I'm going to need a Bonnet Scoop - any ideas. Kind of L88 I think, for the Antipodeans amongst us it's probably close to a Torana A9X scoop.

I should get it done just in time for Scalextric to release one.

Ted - that is going to be awesome! See if you can find a junk Scalextric L-88 Corvette - I believe that is the correct scoop on the Camaro.

I think you should be able to find one and graft it on pretty easily.

Re: Next project Red Dawson Camaro - Progress made

Postby Reslotted » Thu Feb 20, 2014 11:48 pm

Ok, made a little progress.
It seems that this car ran in about a million different configurations and changed race to race. The hood scoop was more like an A9X torana one at one stage. So after rifling through my box of bits and Bobs I found a blanking cover for a switch from my days at Mazda (Never throw anything away) this was about the right shape but a little big, so I sectioned it and glued it back together and there you go.

Grafted it to the Camaro and here's where we are at - Looks a little blingy at the moment, but a few decals and stripes should have it looking more like a Camaro and not something that should be hung on a chain around a rappers neck.

So far so good. will post more as I go. :D

Ted - FANTASTIC!!! WOW is this thing going to be a looker!!! I love the re-use of the switch cover for the scoop. You did that perfectly!

What color is that?

Contessa Gold, Dave.
I'm Having a few Decal issues at the moment. I think it's because my Decal Paper is pretty old.
Hopefully, some new Decal paper will fix the problem.

Re: NZ Red Dawson Camaro - UPDATE

Postby Reslotted » Thu Mar 06, 2014 10:27 pm

Just a quick update on the progress of this car.
It's been a case of one step forward 3 steps back.

For some odd reason it took 3 goes to get this car painted, something just didn't agree with something else, after a day or so the paint kept going funny. (not Ha Ha funny either).

Eventually I gave up on using the expensive primer, and after stripping it back again, I used the real cheap hardware store primer, repainted it and - success. The primer and paint were identical brands, but I'm starting to think the primer and plastic didn't get on together.

Took 3 goes to print the decals and get them to work, I put that down to using ancient paper that had possibly "gone off".
After buying new decal paper I was successful.

The Bonnet/Hood stripes arrived from Patto's and were applied, it took a few goes to get them to fit around the bonnet scoop and ended up with me cutting them into 6 pieces.

It was looking good until I cleared it .........
The crappy homemade decals were fine, but Pattos have just fried. I've always used Future but on the last few builds I've used Tamiya clear with great results. I know that Patto's newer waterslides were a bit odd with Acrylic clear, but I've developed a method with his older ones that used fine mist coats and when fully dry, hit it with the heavy coat.
The mist coats were fine, but as soon as I hit the heavy coat - FAIL.

I used 1 or 2 small decals from Patto that I've had for years as well and they were also fine.

This car is making me tear my hair out.
The next stage is rub back just the stripe area, re apply more decals and just future over them. It just sucks because the rest of the car looks a million bucks.

Stay Tuned.

You have my sympathy Ted. I hate it when the littles suckers fight back. At the moment I have been working on a bit of a production line of Brit 'Mod Sports'. Four are finished but the last one, an XK-120, oh man, what a pain, just one thing after another.

Still, we do it for fun, right?

Chris.

Sometimes I think we have a fairly masochistic idea of what is "fun". I've got so mad with having to strip and repaint things lately. I just bought an ultrasonic cleaner in the hopes of speeding the process up a little.

Hang in there Ted. You know it'll be worth it in the end.

Oh, and you might find BMF's decal sealer worth a go. It's a brush on, but it seals well and Tamiya clear won't disturb it.
