I also used a latex for the gains and the slot that was the color of each lane, but unlike the link above, I painted the slots first:

Then I taped them over and painted the track surface.

Once the braid is laid, it looks great, a lot less distracting than stripes next to the slot IMO.

Oh, and latex for the surface is not necessarily the best paint. If you can afford it, use UMA (urethane-modified acrylic). It only comes in white, but can be tinted to grey, and it provides much better traction for a wider range of tire types than anything else I have raced on.
