What kind of paint for the slots?

I'm going to be routing the gains for braid this week on my track build.. and I know I need to
seal or paint the gains prior to putting the tape down.

What kind of paint do I use for the slots and gains??
Just a latex like the track surface?
Should I go with a gloss?

FWIW Kev, on our shop track, I went across the street to the hardware store and bought some "sample" containers in the proper colors. They were like 4 oz containers and did the job just fine. Check out your local hardware store/paint shop. I'm sure whatever they have will work fine. If the paint is made for wood, it'll "soak in" and work just fine...

We just used the same paint as we use on the racing surface. I rout the gain then I put the primer and the track color down afterwards. We paint the slot the same color as the track.

A gloss paint, the color of the lane, will save you a lot of fooling around when you dust the track. Flat paint collects dust, gloss paint doesn't. Its that simple, really.

I also used a latex for the gains and the slot that was the color of each lane, but unlike the link above, I painted the slots first:



Then I taped them over and painted the track surface.



Once the braid is laid, it looks great, a lot less distracting than stripes next to the slot IMO.



Oh, and latex for the surface is not necessarily the best paint. If you can afford it, use UMA (urethane-modified acrylic). It only comes in white, but can be tinted to grey, and it provides much better traction for a wider range of tire types than anything else I have raced on.
