Oddly enough. I've just taken delivery of a Gullwing kit from Munter. Always loved this car. Glad I can finally have one (when I get around to building it).

The Mercedes Benz 300sl gullwing is a timeless piece.

I have built up an old Revell body and put it on a Ninco exige chassis.

Then I bought a resin off Rixvette when he was doing bodies and later bought his two piece mold. Windows was the issue here. Did a few bodies and then put the mold away.

Some time later my casting technique had improved a bit and I molded and cast the gullwing again using a Japanese kit body.

I haven't built one up but have done windows, interior and bumpers.

Dave you gave the SL a so cal look I have never seen a 300 with that deep of a wheel, model or 1:1 car, But I'm digging the look!!!!!

After all it's your car so if you like you keep.
Besides if it makes the car fun for you then do what is fun for you.
There is no written rule on how the cars are to be when you or someone else builds a car to run.
And about late spring I'm going to show some stuff I've been working on and some will like it others won't but you will see some things that will make you say what the heck.

I vote no. Too far. Way to far. But, hey. What do I know? I'm s classics fan and the gullwing is a classic.

But, it's your car to do with as you wish. Isn't that the point of building them?

There are about a half dozen guys running gull wing coupes in vintage racing. Most of them are running Rudge wheels.
I need to find a model or slot car wheel so I can copy these in resin.

Back in the day most cars were driven to the races. Trailering did not come in until the big teams got involved, and
the cars became too modified to drive on the street.

Yeah, only the rich guys in California trailered their cars in. It wasn't because they weren't street legal, it was for status. There are so many old pictures of Cadillacs and Lincolns pulling a Mercedes or Ferrari or Corvette or Maserati. In the Deep South, it was a pickup truck, dragging an Austin Healy Bugeye Sprite or an MG on a trailer with hay bales or chicken boxes, all on the way to the State Fair. There was a great SCCA track in Stuttgart, Arkansas, but there were smaller, impromptu tracks all over.

Lots of former WWII practice airfields were converted to race tracks especially for State Fairs. The design of these tracks frequently was a concrete straight, with either a graded road course, or a concrete straight with an asphalt semi-circle. The old airfields were a circle with an "X" pair of runways that divided the circle. When the airfields reverted to farmlands, the farmers could be coaxed into leaving some portion of the old airfield to be leased to a race organization or aviation use. Nowadays, with most of the farmland in the US owned or leased by corporations, this would be impossible. They own our land, they own our food. Family farms are becoming very rare.
