I'm trying to mix acrylic paint to make an 80's style hotrod out of a Shotgun sedan. The color I want is a deep metallic burgundy kind of similar to a candyapple look. I've already tried apple red, metallic red, metallic purple, metallic violet, metallic gold, yellow and black in various combinations and the color keeps coming out purple ( a very nice version of plum crazy ) or a brownish color :angry-tappingfoot: not what I want. Any ideas on what to try mixing next?

Burgandy is either purplish or brownish. It's the what the colour is. Are you really after burgandy or just a deeper, richer red as distinct to the Candy Apple which is quite bright.

I'd shoot a silver base and then use a transparent red over the top. It will give you the most intense colour. Shoot a couple of layers of your darkened red and then a couple layers of the plain red over the top to bring the redness back into it.

For your red layer, choose as deep and rich a red as you can find and add a drop or two of black and a minute amount of dark blue. This will cool it and purple it off slightly. You really need to add it a drop at a time, because it is very easy to go too far. Be very sparing with the black.

Essential colour mixing guide:
red + yellow = orange
red + blue = purple
red + green = gunky brown
red + black = brownish or purplish depending on the black

I always thought "Candy Apple" was sprayed over a gold metallic base....experiments are fun :lol:

There is a Testors spray called "Honduras Maroon" which is by no means maroon (its a Chevy paint color), and you could shoot it thin over a very light, shimmery metallic blue (there's a Honda color that Lee used on that Camaro he did recently on HRW), for the effect. Just add thin coats of the Honduras Maroon until you have what you want.

Okay, smartasses, its just to show how the contours of that car shows off the beauty of Candy Apple Red. I don't have a picture of his car. I met the guy in a bank parking lot and kept up with him for a while. Hot rod encounters, there were thousands of them in those days.

Actually, I've seen the same model of car with the most beautiful rich dark purple on it. You just fall into the paintwork it's been done with that many layers of clear colour. Under coat is done in two grades of mica because if you view from the right angle you can see some very subtle flamework. It's a beauty to behold.

You may not be able to get the effect that you are looking for using acrylic paint. The candy apple paint jobs from the '60s were a translucent color applied over a gold base. To do this car I first shot it with gold, then I topped that off with Testors Ruby Red Metallic enamel. More coats of red would make the color darker, but might tend to lessen the candy apple effect.

That is a sweet looking finished red! How many coats of the Testors ruby red over the base gold did it take to get that shade?

You have to use hobby metallics. They have a smaller flake size. Actually, I've seen micas and pearls available to mix your own.
