I admire those who have the talent to do wood carving and it looks like a car. I wouldn't be very good at as I'm all thumbs when doing things like that. I can see it in my mind but getting it to look like what I'm thinking never happens. I guess I just lack that talent. :)

get some cloth tape and cut it the width you want and build it up with tape, the texture of the tape will look like upholstery

That's looking really good! Some 1/43 scale running gear would probably work for that.

David, how about fabricating the grille, say by soldering brass or nickel silver strip.

You could then file it to shape, and when the body is nearly ready , glue it on before pouring the silicone.

This would make it easier to get all the sharp edges; easier than trying to carve them in balsa.

Or, maybe easier, make it up in plastic card strip.

Just a couple of ideas.

Well done Dave. I like to see someone as driven as myself. Makes me feel normal. You also must have an understanding wife.

From where I am, it looks good, as does the entire car.

It looks magnificent,David!

Is it that a slim can motor won't fit under the driver's seat, or is it that it won't fit within the width of the body?

If it's the first, then a Carrera Go motor with an extended drive shaft might just fit under the bonnet(hood, sorry) because those motors are just shorter than the slim cans.

If it's the second, you might have to invoke a bit of "modeller's licence", and carve the body a bit wider than truly scale.

Better to find out now than when the first one comes out of the mould! :angry-banghead:

A chap on Slotforum did some Midgets for sale a few years ago. He used a modified Strombecker body, and a long slim can motor was a very tight fit. Were Strombecker Midgets 1/32, or 1/24.

There are some square H.O. motors that have plenty of power that would fit under the seat with room to spare. Check out Slot Car Express and look for pt# SCE-FB-1, Fyrebox-1 High pref. motor. Or even the Tecno Slot 1/43 scale chassis kit.

If that motor is fitted with its widest dimension across the car, you're going to be ok.

The final castings can be much thinner than the master, because they aren't going to need to take the rough handling of doing the initial modelling.

Why not do a quick slosh cast as thin as you dare - then you'll see how much room you've got.

Ouch ! (on both counts!)

It'll be all that grinding of the teeth during the delicate carving.
