The stuff I used first was simply called Sanding Sealer. You had to use cellulose thinner to clean the brush. It dried very quickly to a hard clear surface which was easy to sand.Once it was the right shape( and I guess in the case of the Midget, when the panel lines are scribed), I did a couple of coats of automotive filling primer with sanding between;the a couple of coats of regular primer, with more sanding. I suppose some of this might have been beginners overkill, but it did result in a smooth finish with no sign of woodgrain showing through.
One thing, though; if you don't make sure the ventilation is good, you can feel the solvents dissolving your brain!
I'm not sure that you can get cellulose paint here any more, but I guess no-one much cares about the brains of aero-modellers.
