Adding more pit lane sensor tracks will work, but will take up a lot of space on your layout. Here's my current pit lane set-up. It is a two bay pit.

You can see the space it takes up. I use a chicane piece for my pit entrance and exit, so it could be shorten by two track lengths there. But if you want more than two bays, the crossover track will have to be changed to a double LC and then another for each additional pit bay. I had mine set up with separate pit bays with a double LCs between each bay. During races people were not getting into the right bays and sometimes not in any pit and having to go around and try again. This really took the fun out of it, most times we would run races without turning the fueling on. So I went with this setup, this way once you switch into the pit lane you will end up in one of the pit bays.

Once you pass over the pit sensor you can stop anywhere and refuel. So if you just want to have cars pit in different spots along a longer pit lane you do not need more sensors. I am not sure, but if a car passes over more than one sensor it may mess up the refueling somehow.
I had mine set up like the pic below and as long as you do not stop or speed back up after passing over the pit sensor you could refuel in either lane.

thanks randy im going with your idea but what i did was cut a few 1/60 curves in half and used the widest part i did 4 so on my back straightaway if you jump off to refuel u have to slow up due to the turns looks pretty cool when someone is pitting and the field is still running.i will post photos in a few im working on a gas station and country store three isle service station with work bays i am loving this what n the world took me so long to get here.
