Fly Racing kits

So far, I have bought two of the Fly Racing kits. Initially I bought the BMW M1 which for me was a disappointment as it did not run well on my Scaley Sport track and I had not discovered PG tires at that time. Recently I purchased the Porsche 934 kit and I am getting better performance on the Scaley sport track but even better results on the routed MDF surface. As I recall the BMW kit had set screw hubs and only one motor pod option with only one gearing option. The Porsche came with press on hubs, front & rear, that have a positive locking feature consisting of a flat spot on the axles to which when the hubs are pressed on does not allow slippage. The wheels can be removed without damaging the hubs. It came with three crown gears, which is good because after assembly the pinion gear slipped on the armature shaft and stripped itself and one of the crown gear. The armature shaft has no splines so finding a pinion that is tight was a must. I may switch to a brass pinion and if it isn't tight I will solder it. The front tires had a lot of flash that had to be sanded off and the front axle has a lot of float. The kit came with a second motor pod but I haven't checked to see if it is firmer or softer than the one that was mounted on the chassis. It also has an extra set of pod springs and again I haven't checked to see which set is firmer.

The car body itself is well executed and comes with a light weight lexan interior. I assume this car is a rally version as it has a co-driver.

I bought those several years ago when they came out. I think there have been a couple of reviews about the Fly Fast Kits on HRW. I never got to like that Porsche because the wheels and tires are so out of scale to the body. I always said I would retrofit some proper sized wheels and tires to it, but never got around to it. I never tried the green motor pod or the spare springs, either, but I still have them. Did the crown gears that came in you kit look very much like Slot.It gears?

The crown gears do resemble those from slot.It but as I quickly discovered Fly used a metric axle size that is ever so slightly larger than 3/32. I tried using a slot.It gear but it would not fit the axle. So instead of using 3/32 bushings Fly went with the larger axle size and made crown gears to match. So I guess that if I want to switch to an all slot.It rear end I will have to replace the bushings.

I did some checking and from what I could find, this car shouldn't have a co-driver. Right or wrong?

I never looked it up. I really only bought the kit to see what Fly was up to. I always had a soft spot for Fly, ever since the first Lola T-70 they did.

One of my most favorite cars to drive - an axle stopper to keep the crown from being chewed up and a set of slot its on the rear
and you are good to go (non mag of coarse) - and i have not explored the spring /pod extras yet as the car handles so well on wood!!!!!
My favorite one is the M1 -but the rest are no slouches!!!

I read recently that on one guys track a Fly BMW was in the top 5? 7? of the fastest cars. Faster than Slot.it! Some Flys are good some are....

There are a couple of these racing kits on e-bay now going for a buy it now price of $24 plus $5 shipping. They are the Porsche 934 and the BMW M1. I might get another BMW now that I know more about how to tune it.

My best running Fly is my BMW M1 with the sidewinder setup. It has a slot.It 21.5k motor with a complete Slot.It rear end and PG tires. I also used the Fly Racing body with the lexan tray interior.
