Carrera DTM proxy?

Postby Czar » Sat Mar 16, 2013 11:40 am

I had so much fun with Austin's Carrera GT proxy last year I am thinking of putting together a proxy for another class. Before I commit I would like some feedback, since this is the first time I have ever tried anything like this with slot cars. I am thinking of a Carrera proxy because the cars run well against each other, they are quite affordable, and there seems to be a lot of love for Carrera on this board. I am thinking of DTM because I think those cars look really brutal and aggressive, and with only three marques racing, it might get some people to do some cool re-paints. So, here are some questions that will push me forward, or bring me to a grinding halt. Thanks for taking time for my survey. I will let this run for a while before I finally decide.

1) Is there any interest in another Carrera proxy?
2) Would another brand be more enticing?
3) Is DTM a good choice or would you prefer another class of racers?
4) Would you like rules that allow only a few tweaks, or open to more modifications?
5) Would a few bonus laps be an enticement for personally painted and decorated cars?
6) Would #5 mess up everything?
7) Would you enter?
8) Would you be willing to host?
9) Is late spring, early summer a good time for a proxy?
0) What have I left out?

My best suggestion is to set it up how you would like it to be. But the fewer "tweaks" the better IMHO.

Gutting the entire chassis and replacing it with a brass or HRS chassis isn't really a Carrera race anymore.

First I think it would be nice to wait until the new DTM cars are released? Let folks work with them a little?

I would send one in...but I just can't host. Too little time I am afraid.

To begin with, I like the idea of DTM racing. I watched some of this earlier in the year for the first time and realized just how intense the racing is.

Now, anyone can throw a lot of parts at a car and make it better. It does take a bit more talent to take the raw material and massage it so it works properly. That is the mark of a good tuner.

The closer to stock, the better it will be.

At a purchase price of $32.99, it makes it something most folks can compete in.

Probably the most important things to know is what type of track the cars will be raced on.

Overall, I think you will have a FUN-filled race. Let me know more.

Regarding the track(s), I hope there would be a mix of plastic and wood. I have a painted Carrera track so at least one track will be plastic.

Regarding tweaks vs. modifications, my initial thoughts were to keep the changes relatively minor to promote a lower cost entry and to promote tuning. But, I just want to see what others think.

I thought the DTMs had been released, but if not, that certainly impacts when the race can be held. Maybe DK can give us an idea when these cars might be available.

We have alot of fun with D132 DTM's. We keep them stock, Carrera's really do well with carefull attention to the wheels and axle bushings. Running Super Tires, they are all about the same speed because most take the ST 1408. The only exception so far is the newest MBZ with the D132 ready chassis, it has a skinny tire that SSC says a ST1402 may fit. Until we try that, we've been putting axle sets from Corvette C6R's in so we can run a ST 1408.
If any of the cars have an advantage, it's probably the early Evolution cars, they are lighter.

How about putting the GT and the DTM in the same proxy but differtant classes. Saves money in shipping.
GT class woulf stay the same as last year but you can change guides.

Carrera GT Class

1 Any 1990 or newer Carrera GT, GT1, GT2, GT3. body, chassis, interior, motor all from same car
2 All tires must be in stock location
3 May change bushings, axles, gears, wheels & tires only
4 May add lead to any part of the car for weight
5 Must remove magnets
6 Must have your name on bottom of chassis
7 May lower or rise body
8 Each car will run at 10 volts, 6 minutes per lane at all tracks
9 May trim edges of chassis slightly
10 No cutting of body
11 you may change the giude

You would have to list the bodies we could use as I just went to Carrera slots and they didn't list any DTM cars ?

Austin, I would be happy to do that, but I don't want to interfere with the GT series you started. Maybe I jumped the gun. I remember seeing the Carrera DTM cars a while back and I thought they had been released. Since my nearest LHS is an hour's drive away I don't get to see open stock very often. I guess I got suckered by the tease. So, maybe I am premature with this.

There will be one of each of the BMW, Audi, and Mercedes new DTM's released this year in North America. The chassis used under all 3 is a common chassis. They won't be released until late third quarter of this year though.

Obviously the DTM idea is on hold. Going into the holidaze (sic) does not seem like a good time to hold a proxy. So, if anybody has an idea for another proxy, to be combined with Austin's Carrera GT proxy, let's talk about it. I would suggest the same rules as Austin has for the GT cars. Maybe a Fly Classic proxy? I have a two lane, painted Carrera track that is about 58 feet in length and is quite technical. I am not too sure that rockets like Slot.it of NSR would be that good on such a small track, but I have cars from both manufacturers, so I would also be open to that. I like the classics rather than modern era LMPs. Let's keep talking.

Edited to add: Rules for the cars not in the GT category would be the same as the Carrera GT, but power set at 12 volts.

Well, if the DTM is on hold, what about doing a Fly front-motor proxy? Corvette C5R, Marcos, Lister Storm, BMW 3.5 CSL? These are cool underdogs. :)

How about something like this ?
-Stock Scalextric and Fly street or racing cars with stock sidewinder chassis.
-1980 or newer body style. No prototype or Nascar style cars.
-Stock Scalextric/Fly 18,000 rpm Mabuchi motors.
-Minimum weight 3.2 oz.
-Max wheel width 10 mm.
-Must have stock interior and clear windows.
-11/36 spec gear ratio

Kurt, I like your idea very much. Similar cars to the GTs but obviously very different too.
Austin, that seems like a fine set of criteria, too. We can gather several ideas and then have a vote. Anyone else with ideas, feel free to add them in this post.

-Stock Scalextric/Fly style 18,000 rpm Mabuchi motors or Carrera E200
-Minimum weight 3.2 oz.
-Max wheel width 11mm.
-3.0 to 1 or taller gear ratio (8/24)(9/27)(10/30), crown can be bigger.
