Lotus Super 7 build 2

Postby VTECFOUR » Sun Jul 29, 2018 12:10 pm

The first build worked out well, so another's in order. This time with cycle front fenders. More out of necessity as the used Tamiya kit body already had one of the sail-like fenders cut off.

Image

Sawed off the remaining fender. Cowl, bonnet and nose glued and epoxied together in preparation for the chassis, one of my adjust-o-wheelbase ones. The 1/32 Scalextric Caterham, one of my favorite slot cars, is a good reference for this larger version.

Body shell's trimmed to fit the assembled chassis.

Going with the same wheel/tire combination as my build 1, RS Slot Racing RSW002 rims/PG 22073 tires.

Looks really great so far. I like those in 1/32, and have several. Might need to build a big un!

Wheels/tires mounted and body mock-fitted.

Got some resin fenders off one of my Aurora 32 Ford sedan casts.

Need modification and a mounting system but at least they're the right diameter and have a rolled edge.

Some progress on the front cycle wings and head lamps.

Abandoned the resin ones and severely modified old plastic kit tires with bent 3/64 brass rod for support. Rods will be soldered on the front axle square tube. Fit will be fiddly to sit just above the tires and not rub.

Epoxied in a 3/32" square brass tube above the axle to hold the kit's headlamp assemblies.

Wings positioned and stays soldered in.

Tires rub just a bit so out come the files.

Spray-primed body pieces with Tamiya Fine Grey followed with Tamiya TS-43 Racing Green.

Wheel inserts are my resin copies of the kit's trimmed-down steel rims.

Pleased with the look.

Was thinking of painting the nose, yellow, but with the red interior that helps my desire for more color contrast.

This is not my scale, but that is not going to stop me from following this build.

You're doing a great job so far.

Chassis's rolling. Drivetrain's a Scalextric Sport FF050 21K motor with BWA 9t pinion and Slot It 27t crown gears.

The guide's my usual choice of the Scale Auto SC-1604 Universal Home, 7mm blade but something unusual cropped up. The shaft is larger than 9/64" as all the previous renditions have been. Is this a one-off or has Scale Auto changed the spec?

Nice thing about 1/24 small car builds is that the same chassis can be used that I construct for 1/32 cars.

Did some modelling detail work.

- wheel inserts and instrument panel paint detailed
- Brooklands screen and mirror painted
- headlamps (missing chrome and clear lenses) filled with epoxy and taped over
- nose screen (missing from kit) cut from fine mesh and surround painted in a yellow accent
- rollbar hoop bent from 1/16" piano wire
- roundels decals applied
- exhaust fabricated from 1/16" piano wire and sleeved aluminum tubing (5/32", 1/8", 3/32")

Definitely helped mute the green body finish.

Don't have the right driver figure handy so the steering wheel mounting will wait for that.

Runs fine too so we're pretty much done.

Went through my 1/24 kit assortment and found a nice driver figure in the Monogram Chaparral 2D.

Sits nicely in the 7's seat at the right angle. Removed the left leg and sanded the arms to clear the motor. Paint detail was icing on the cake.
