I'm not too fond of the long tailed 908s but this one, to me, looks better than the bob tailed 908s. Medium long tail, just right.

Bob - that Fly Porsche 908 looked familiar so I checked and yes, I have that car too and upgraded to the same PG's. Just ran a few laps with it and it is a nice car. I bought it and 3 other 908's right here on HRW for about the same price each you paid.

Even though this ran at Le Mans I have it categorized in my Can-Am series to run with other open cockpit cars. All of my Le Mans seires (World Sportscar Championship Series) cars are closed cockpit like the Ford GT40.

This car is a valuable addition for anyone with an interest in the history of Le Mans. The Ferrari 512s and Porsche 917s dominated in 1970 and 1971, then were gone too soon after the 1972 engine displacement was legislated to just 3 L.

The 1970 race attrition was very high, partly due to rainfall making the track additionally treacherous. Only 7 cars were listed as officially completing the race. This car, driven by Helmut Marko and Rudi Lins, finished 3rd. A 2 L Porsche 914 6 cylinder car finished 6th!

I am interested in the history of Le Mans as well as Can-Am and Trans Am from the late 60's and early 70's. I'd imagined that only closed cockpit cars ran in the 24 hour race since the weather could be a factor. It still seems that driving an open cockpit 908 in the rain must have been difficult, even though at speed airflow off the windshield would keep direct rain off the driver. But the swirling mist and rooster tails off other cars must have filled the cockpit with moisture and created difficulty with vision.

But, my question is, given the 'run what you brung' nature of the Can-Am series, if Helmut Marko showed up at a race with a Porsche 908 wouldn't he be able to enter it? A Youtube video of a Can-Am race mentions how a number of top drivers who participated in a major 6 hour race then asked their teams to stay over so they could enter their cars in a Can-Am race with a hefty payout for finishing positions. Jackie Stewart ended up on the pole for the race, but I couldn't recognize the car. Maybe the 908's would be a little under powered compared to 917/10's and 30's, but I don't see how that would rule them out.

Slothead....I'll add a few comments here but may not fully answer your questions.

In the early 1970s at Watkins Glen, a World Championship 6 hour race for sports prototypes was held on the same weekend that a ~2 hour Can Am event took place, 6 hour enduro on Saturday followed by the Can Am on Sunday. The Can Am rules were few, basically a car with wheels covered by fenders and two seats; no limit to engine displacement. World endurance sports cars had much more stringent rules and, in 1970 and 1971, a 5 L limit to engine displacement.

In 1970 and 1971, the Porsche 917s and 512s were competitive with the Can Am cars and successfully ran both races at Watkins Glen. Listings of those results can be found on line. Here are the 1970 results:

By 1972 the endurance sports cars were regulated down to a 3 L engine limitation and could no longer compete with the much more powerful Can Am cars.
