Chaparral 2A

Dug this out of my junk drawer. It was an old Strombecker? Chaparral. The proportions were not right, so I removed a few millimeters on the back that overhung the rear wheels, shortening the over all length of the car.

Built a inline Brass and Lego chassis using a small N class 22 K@12 volt motor. Top end is good, but the small motors lack the grunt for adequate braking. To remedy this I installed an adjustable friction plate on the rear axle that allows you to dial in some mechanical braking.( basically two small washers with a small spring between them. Tighten the compression on the spring increases the rolling resistance of the chassis.










Printed the decals on my laser printer and vacuum formed the glass.

I really enjoy your builds, what glue are you using to attach the lego pieces to the brass chassis plates?

I use Gorilla CA glue. It doesn't set up right away so you have a few seconds to get things in the correct position

Yeah, love the 2A. A groundbreaking car using a a "plastic" chassis at the time. Pretty cool.
Also several versions available with Strombecker, Monogram, Hawk, Eldon (2C style bodywork) so lots of options. Plus Revell and Zee....the list goes on and on.

Nice job....I need to get off my duff and do more projects.....

Very nice Chappie. I have had the pleasure to visit the Petroleum Museum where the Chaparrals are on exhibit AND when Jim Hall drove one around the front drive during the periodic demo runs they do to keep them maintained.
I am thinking about following your lead on this early Chaparral model, the 2 with the flat rear end panel with the simple tacked on flat spoiler with cut outs for the top mounted horizontal exhausts, I think Hawk and Palmer only made such a model. These are rather pricey now.

I had that hawk model as a kid. You just mentioning it gave me a flashback when i was Less then 10 assembling it and painting the exhaust after it was assembled. Now that I am just about 60 it feels nice remembering those times
