Guidance From Those That Have Gone Before Us

Postby Florida_Slotter » Mon Feb 11, 2013 1:25 pm

Shortly after we had all 4 lanes back up and running - had a couple of copper tape splits from moving the track - it seems like most of the club members have caught "NASCAR Fever", big time.

Right now the cars of choice seem to be the Carrera "Classic" NASCAR models. Mostly Fords, Dodges, Plymouths are represented in this group.

We are looking at keeping the cars as stock as stock cars can be. Many of our members are not 'tinkerers', so all sorts of modifications are probably going to fall on the shoulders of 2 of our members.

Probably the way to go is taking a Carrera car, putting on a pair of Paul Gage tires, truing them and racing them.

Anyone have any experience with this type of racing? From the few 'unofficial' races we have held, the cars are very competitive like this.

Bibbster,

Already did my #30 "Iggy" Katona Dodge Charger 500. It just runs so silky smooth.

Thanks for that tip. I use it on all cars that have loose rear bushings.

Jeremy,

Thanks for the link. I just ordered one of the Revell-Monogram cars to see if it is competitive or not with the Carrera cars. It will have all the tips and tricks done in that article - I was looking through it the other day. I'll let you know.

Right now the plan is to take the Monogram car, do basic preps on it, install and true a pair of Paul Gage Tires and see how it fares against a Carrera car. I am hopeful that there will be little difference in performance.

It sure would be nice to add some 66 and 67 year cars to the fray.

Marty if you're speaking of the REV/MONO vintage stock cars, you may be in for a surprise. One of our club members brought six of his rev/mono stockers of the Richard petty/ Mario Andretti era to our race the other night. We had just finished running Scaley NASCARS and he wanted to run the Rev/Mono cars in IROC style. We didn't try the two together on the oval, but it sure seemed to me the Rev/Mono cars were much faster with just trued (stock) tires and lubricated running gear. I'd be curious to know your results. This was the first time I had run these vintage stockers and it almost made an oval fan out of me ,Almost. These vintage stockers are what I remember stock car racing to be.
