My Revell/Monogram Daytona Cobras

Postby Modlerbob » Sat Jan 26, 2013 3:09 am

Since this is the weekend of the Rolex 24hr. race at Daytona I was playing with my two R/M Daytona Cobras this week. I purchased a couple pairs of Paul Gage tires for them and what a difference these tires make. I put a pair on my dark blue Cobra and left the original tires on the other. On the new mdf track the car with the PG (trued)tires cornered smoothly and accelerated out of the turns without excessive fish tailing. The other Cobra with the stock (trued) tires could hardly be controlled through the turns with any speed and would fish tail halfway down the main straight. I've had these cars for about two years and after adding some mag downforce they navigated my Scaley sport track like a couple of overweight tanks and therefore stayed on the shelf most of the time. I've seen some complaints online about their handling qualities and I agree that they are not at their best on plastic but are one of those cars that are really at home on wood with the right tires.

Now I want the red one!

Bob, one quick "tuning fix" that will help these a little: remove the spare tire. That is a match to the fronts and it is a lot of weight to have that high up in the tail. If you are concerned with the cosmetics, one guy I know scanned the spare on his flat bed and printed out on cardstock then put that in the rear window.

Did you miss this?

By the way, removing that spare tire didn't make any real difference in any of the cars tested, no matter how they were tuned.

I never could get mine to run good. I may take another look at it. Maybe if I redesign the interior using lighter weight materials...?

Mine runs sweetly with an NC-1 in it and the tuning tips in the thread 'way' posted

I have just picked up the revell body kit and plan to put a HRS chassis under it or I might have a go at a brass chassis for it.

They need work but they have what many cars do not: Character.

First, I think these are some of the most eye appealing race cars ever built. Revogram did a decent job in scale for us, it is just they need work in order to perform to our own personal tastes. Just like any other car out there.

On our track these are right up there in the "all the fun you can have" category :)

Amazing what the right tire can do, both in 1:1 and in 1:32.

Someone on here once said Revogram is a model company first.....they make a beautiful body, stick some gears and wheels under it and leave the rest up to us. Isn't that half the fun (frustration)?

I swapped the motor for an M/T Resins M/T-1 motor, added a little weight, lowered it slightly, and added PG tires. Awesome car now. Glad you are having fun with it!

And, as always, the base car from the hobby shop doesn't cost a fortune to begin with. There are still some that meet this description, but fewer now than in the past. I've been having a ball going back and fixing up cars from the past that I left in stock condition. Like we have all said, fixing them up is half the fun.
