Tullius Group 44 cars and decals?

Postby Guildman » Sun Jan 13, 2013 10:51 am

Hi all, my son is a Group 44 fan and wants to recreate all the team's cars in 32nd and 24th scales.
He is missing a lot of bodies from which to make these, especially a 32nd scale TR3, GT6 Mk2 (GT6+), XJR5 and V-12 E-Type.
Can any one suggest any?

Also, he'll need a supply of decals to suit all these including the green stripes, the Quaker State wording and of course those odd backwards 44s used on the boot lid.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I'm an old Group 44 fan; a million years ago (1971) I had a green 65 Spitfire and my racing stripe went across the nose!
I think Jim Heller has a set of Group 44 decals but not sure for what car. You can make your own on a printer with just a bit of practice.
As far as the missing cars; you can find 1/32 TR3 model kits on ebay fairly regularly, I've never seen a GT6, not sure on the XJR5 and I know I've seen a (1/32) V-12 E type resin body out of Europe someplace. I'm assuming he's already got the MGB, TR4 (TR 250) and TR6 covered. Wish I could be more help. Good luck and post the results, we'd love to see them.

Thanks, Captain. Well we've got the decals covered, by two customers of mine. We have a TR3 coming from Pendle's and a Spitfire, which I'll turn into all the different versions of Spitfire and GT6. Don't have a TR6 and Pendle's are out of stock. Of course we can't just go buying everything out there!
We have a 24th scale GT6 and a TR3. No idea about the XJR5 and no sign of a V12 E yet, but I did a Rally TR7V8 pattern for SMK a while back so we'll convert one of those.
So we're making progress.
My son also wants to paint his own GT6 road car in Group 44 colours and I've found proof that Bob ran a Mk3, so he's chuffed.

Cheers,
Martin

Son's got a GT6? very cool. Found a pic of my Spit (not good) fun car, went from it to a 59 TR3 for my "project car".
Remember, there were never any TR5s in the US, they were TR250s.

Oh that takes me back. I had a Spitfire just like that one for a couple of years. It hated sharp left hand bends and would cut out. So I would get out and kick it! Didn't have a straight panel on it when I sold it!

I did the Group 44 E-type several years ago using an Airfix E-type Series I kit and modifying
it to correct the overall dimensions. Right now this is the only way I know of to build one.
Airfix has MG-B and TR-4 kits. Cade had decals but he has been out of production for a
long time now.

Hi Dave,
I'm doing the mods to a resin Spitfire and the Airfix kit at the moment and will pop them as resins when they're done. A friend has offered to do me some decals too. My son is working on a TR4 kit currently.
What I just can't find is anything on the Dodge Dart apart from a rather pricey resin from Speed City Resins.
Can't even find any drawings for it! I'm looking for a 43rd die-cast to scale up to drawings for a master if all else fails.
We have a Revell Lotus Cortina coming and a Scalextric Pontiac for the Winston cup car.
Also I'll be doing GT6 masters from the basic Spitfire model that is under way. And a TR3a master as that car is long overdue a decent model.

Thanks for your interest.
Cheers,
Martin

There is a Tullius 1966 Dart in the works ;) The Rapid Prototyped part gets back-cast in the next week and then the finishing begins...

Gobucks,
That's the Jag I'm working on currently.
Thanks for the heads up on Patto's decals, but I ain't paying £11 a sheet postage and I can't be doing with car crash websites. Makes my head hurt. I have a client who is doing us some decals specially. Not sure if he can do them enough to put in my kits, but I can also get them done by Milan Tomacek in the Czech Republic.
Time was, you could get decals done by anyone with a silk screen process and do the a/w with a Rotring pen. Now you have to be a pootah buff and send files to one of very few companies, which all annoys me intensely.

Cheers,
Martin

The colors are way off in that picture. I even had a hard time matching the dark green for
the wheel inserts on the 1/32nd car I did.

There is a guy running a Group 44 E-type clone in vintage racing. I have to admit that at one
time I considered doing my car up that way as well. Incidently, Chuck Haines at Can-Am cars
has the Fast Forward E-type for sale. which was an identical car to the Tullius car.

Yep, unfortunately old KODAK Ektachrome (way back before digital) does not always preserve well. I took that photo in 75 at Summit Point SCCA Nationals. Sorry was just posting for historic reference..Dude said he was working on a V-12 Jag.

Gobucks, thanks for the pic. The "Dude" is well into the master and all pics are useful. I've emptied the internet into my folders!

Dave, did you settle on a suitable colour for the wheels? Please don't say Tamiya as I can't get their paints over here! I'm guessing it's something like Lotus Mid Brunswick green, a slightly yellowish hue, rather than the bluer greens, a nice rich colour. It's two-tone green that I love about Group 44. Normally white cars/aircraft/boats do nothing for me, but Tullius had a style that is infectious. And of course, I'm a lifelong Triumph fan, having owned 15 of them!
A friend sent me a Proto-Slot XJR5 too this morning which was good o him, though I think it may be a bit overscale, like most of their products, so I'm told.

Thanks for your help gents.
