Ford Ranchero

Postby VTECFOUR » Thu Nov 05, 2015 3:31 pm

After running my Scalextric Mustang in our local club's Trans Am race, I thought that I'd like to build a metal chassis car for the class. Coincidentally, I'd just received a loaner AMT Ford Ranchero to make a mold from. Bingo! Why not a Ford Falcon bodied car? Yeah, I know, a pick up version is a bit of a stretch but the guys will probably be fine "as long as it's not too fast!".

The body came with decades old brushed on paint and devoid of a grille, bumpers or glass. So after alcohol bath stripping and steel wool rubbing, I've got the body relatively clean and have added front and rear valences and a bed cover to prepare the master.

Chassis's one of my favorites, the long departed BWA adjustable wheelbase jewel.

Stay tuned.

I'm in line, too. Just let us know. That's a favorite of mine for many years.

Managed to fill that gaping hole with an appropriate grill/headlights.

That's better.

That is looking great, Dan.

Did you use the grille you showed us on Friday or did you make a mould from it?

Soon you'll have a brass chassis car for every one of our racing classes, and my reign as Constructor's Champion will be over.

No worry, isn't scratch building great?

Cheers,

Keith

The primer really shows the details you got in the mold. Excellent work.

Went to the cupboard and only had eight month old resin mix and barely enough to do a slosh body cast. Might as well as try and this is the result.

Yep, old resin doesn't work well. Lots of surface voids and paper thin spots. Not a waste at all though. I'll reinforce the thin areas with epoxy and make this body an oval racer. Gave me an idea of how well sloshing would cover and the amount of fresh resin to mix for future bodies.

On to chassis work and better bodies.

Dan

P.S. Thanks to Retro Racer on suggesting a solution to my master mold problem.

Standing on tiptoes, waiting to hear you'll sell them for a price I can afford. I know resin supplies cost a ridiculous amount.

@ way - the resin cost won't be too bad, but the postal charges from Canada will be irritating.

@ Shotgun - after viewing the "rustification" videos, I think this'll make a good candidate shell. The perforated rusty look is already there!

That's what I thought too.A perfect candidate for "rustination".

Got some fresh resin.

First slosh pop is good with not too many pinholes.

More to come.

May end up with a PCS chassis for the first build.
