Porsche 917 30 Sunoco upgrade with brass chassis

Postby VTECFOUR » Fri Sep 18, 2015 3:38 pm

The Sunoco 917 30 is one of my favorite classic racers so I thought I'd upgrade the Carrera car's performance. Had one of my generic inline scratch build chassis in the bin so that's the basis.

The Carrera's wheel look was a must to retain. Fortunately, the stock rim with rib removal and shortened is an exact fit into Slot It 17" rims, front and rear. Mounted Slot It low profile and friction fronts and PG22166 rears look right.

The stock interior tray is for the most intact with just trimming where the front body mount will be glued in. Otherwise there's not much cutting and removal, just existing body posts. A good stance won't be hard to get.

I'm hoping to run a boxer motor but it looks like it's too tall and long and will interfere with the interior tray.

So far, so good.

That looks awesome, Dan! I love that car with its giant black marshmallow rear tires. Is the Flat 6 motor lower than the boxer? If so it may be the solution, but you may need to create your own bracket to take full advantage and get it down lower. With those tires, you would also probably need a full offset crown.

Cheers,

Dan, thanks for showing that chassis. That same car is going to be the subject of my first brass chases build.

Body's mounted.

Was able to integrate the rear tranny/suspension modeling detail to the body that nicely covers the exposed chassis.

The body could be lowered further, but I'd have to narrow the track so the tires would clear the wheel arch edges. I'll leave it for now.

Installed a JK can motor that was in the parts bin. Have no idea of the rpm, but it must be at least 25K. Transmitted that power through Slot It 8t pinion and 28t crown gears.

Weighs in at 122g so it's nicely planted through the corners and still has good acceleration and straight line speed.

This worked out.

Very nicely done. Is there any pan movement?

Workmanship is outstanding.

All three body mounting screws at behind the front axle and fixed pans need a small degree of loosening to get a nice smooth ride. They're 4-40 screws, a bit large, but I ran out of 2-56 brass screw holders for the mounting posts. As well, I'd prefer flat head tapered screws but the round head ones were what I had in the parts box.

With my adjustable wheel base chassis builds on my small cars, I usually secure the screw on the front post tight and leave the rear ones loose. That way, I get up and down AND fore and aft movement. I think the latter helps handling as long as the rear tires have enough room to not rub on the body's wheel arches.

As mentioned the Porsche 917 needs all three posts loose or I'll get a tiny bit of hopping on hard acceleration. Even though it's an adjustable wheelbase chassis, I didn't allow enough room for rear chassis sliding and some flex to the front axle/guide carrier. Maybe that's why I need all three screws loose.

Dan,

On your next chassis, try putting a piece of .055 wire inside the tubing. You can secure it via some holes in the tubing. I have a chassis built like that and it appears that the disimilar metals give you some damping action. Might just be that little edge you need.

Keep up the great work.
