I am a huge fan of Michael Paul Smith and his Elgin Park series of photographs using 1/24 diecast cars and scratchbuilt buildings posed with full-size buildings and neighborhoods. The shot above certainly evokes the atmosphere of Mr. Smith's techniques. For those who aren't familiar with his work, an Internet search on Elgin Park will turn up many excellent references.

Rick - Michael is definitely the master and has spent years building and fine tuning his Elgin Park story. He has a new book of his works coming out in June. I look forward to getting it.

At the risk of sounding like a sycophant, it was not until reading your post that the realization came about the vehicles being die cast. The composition of the photo and detail of the models is such that I wondered where you had arranged for two such nice restorations.

BTW, has searching the net ever taken you to Verlinden? Stumbled back into it today after years away from building plastic models and found some remarkable things.

I was so enchanted by Smith's first book on Elgin Park that I pre-ordered his second book. The publisher says that he "reveals the magic," so I am hoping to pick up some pointers on creating and photographing dioramas from a master.

I'd say that you are making your own magic with the photos of the fire engine and the pre-War garage!

Slightly off-thread but inspired by it. After viewing your garage and outdoor shoots, since you've been posting them, I was reminded of something from my youth. Do you (or anyone) remember the "Black Tiger" series of books? They and the book "The Red Car" drew me into the world of sports cars. Looking at you shots compelled me to dig out the books and reread them....I guess because your setting reminded me of the mental picture I had of WORM's and to a lesser extent Perez's garages. Thanks for jogging a good memory. For those that are unfamiliar: do a search for Patrick O'Connor and/or Black Tiger sports car.

I am pleased that I could open that door for you. Certainly that's what this sort of thing does for me. I've always loved miniatures and the escape that they can provide. And forced perspectives are something else. Michael Paul Smith opened the door for me a couple of years ago and I have been fascinated by it ever since... or is that obsessed?
