NASCAR CANADA

Postby Retro Racer 44 » Fri Mar 06, 2015 6:17 pm

A Transporter, showing the signs of many miles, has arrived in Canada. I picked it up today and opened it up to see a number of small boxes inside. All seems to be in order, but I will have to wait until I return from Friday night racing at Luf's before I open each car. More to follow.

Cheers,

Keith

Was it an Inuit Snow Tracker?

From here, everything looks frozen all the way past Montreal!

No snow around here this winter! It was over 50 Fahrenheit today. All that snow is in the eastern half of the continent. You have to get well north or high up in the mountains to find any snow.

Anyway, I opened the Nascars tonight and my #88 is now reunited with its wing. Thanks to all for making sure it didn't get lost. Although I haven't track tested them yet, all seem in order except Almafan's #8 whose front body post has parted company with the body. If it is OK Bob, I can put a bit of Goop in there to hold it together until you get it home. You can then pull the Goop off and use the adhesive of choice if you want to.

I had a bit of a scare looking for your car, Todd, and then checked earlier results to see that you didn't have one in this thing. Thanks for running them at Mark's for us.

I have racing on Monday night, and my plan is to go in early and do the qualifying. I hope to run race #1 on Luf's Targa sometime this coming week, and the other on Perry's Rocket the next week. If all goes according to plan, they should be en route to California before the end of the month.

Cheers, eh?

Keith

Glad to hear, that after the initial shipping issue, the cars arrived in relatively short order on the resend. :banana-dance:

We were more than happy to host them here, and had there not been the initial "NO commercial track" requirement thrown down by Rusty, I and possibly Slot Therapist and/or APalmer would have had a cars entered in the series as well. :)
But in the end, at least we had an opportunity to enjoy running the field! :D

Hope you have as much fun with them as we did here in Ohio - they are a great field of cars!

Yes, repair as needed. I used epoxy. But goop will work. Thanks.

The Great White North, eh? I am going to take my camera out tomorrow and get a picture of all the cherry blossoms around the corner from my condo, just to make all you snow-bound easterners jealous. People were out on the streets in sandals, shorts and T shirts today. It was 14 C.

I got the #8 repaired tonight. If I can get away from here in time tomorrow, I'll run the qually before racing tomorrow night.

Qualifying is in the books!

I ran the qualifying this afternoon on Luf's Targa. I ran them in random order as they were in the box I used to take them to the track. The results are as follows:

1. # 9 - 8.40 best time
2. # 8 - 8.53
3. # 38 - 8.80
4. # 19 - 8.90
5. # 17 - 8.92
6. # 10 - 8.98
7. # 98 - 9.01
8. # 73 - 9.23
9. # 88 - 9.34

I will give driving impressions and post pics in a little while.

First let me say that I don't claim to be the fastest driver, but at least the run would be equal for all cars. I did qually at 10 volts (our usual power setting) and ran at least ten laps per car. The Trackmate software was calling out the times and letting me know when I achieved a best time. As I got to 10 laps, I only continued as long as the time was improving, and stopped once it didn't. I expect many of the cars to achieve faster laps during the races. I will use this result for the starting order for both of our races.

I found that all nine of the cars were a joy to drive in qualifying. They all had good handling, grip and brakes. A few of them would come out of the slot if pushed too hard, and none of them showed a tail-happy condition.

#9 was the fastest car and was also the smoothest to drive. It tempted me to try to push it faster, but would de-slot if did.
#8 was very smooth and fast. It must like a little Goop under the hood, eh?
#38 was very well planted because of its weight, but it was very fast in spite of it.
#19 was fast and smooth, but it lifted its rear wheel when pushed and had four de-slots as a result.
#17 was the noisiest car of the group. The gears are a very loose mesh, but the car still runs fast.
#10 has very low clearance underneath. The front edge of the motor pod was touching the tape, and solder joints in the tape caused the car to bump. If I pushed harder it would de-spot.
#98 was not as fast as the cars above, but was a smooth runner. It would also de-slot if pushed harder.
#73 was not as fast, but was smooth. It would de-slot if pushed too hard.
#88 was once again the turtle in qualifying. As usual it was well planted with no offs, but it felt like it had an NC-1 in it compared to the others. I either got a poor Hawk, or the gear ratio is all wrong, but except for two tight corners, I could hold the throttle down all the way around. When this proxy is done, it is getting a Piranha.

The plan is to run the race on Wednesday if drivers and marshals at available.

Hi Steve;

It is just the front edge of the pod, and right now it is only hitting wherever there is a solder joint in the tape. I could file or sand that edge just a little to smooth off the corner and then it would be no problem.
