My uncle brought a Lotus Cortina home with him from his time in the Air Force back in the early 60s. When he arrived at the house, we were all there to meet him, and he drove up in that pale yellow, clunky looking RHD car, and we all just stared at it. It seemed tiny to us, smaller than the Beetles we were only beginning to adjust to. It is actually the same size, it just looks smaller because the wheels are much smaller. He took everyone for a ride in it, and after the grandparents rode in it, it was my turn. We went around the block in about as much time as it takes to buckle a seat belt and blink. I was in love immediately. I had never seen a hand brake handle on the hump before or buckets seats, and when I asked what that handle was, he grinned and said, "That's the landing gear".
