Rock polisher for brass

I read somewhere that you can use a rock polisher (tumbler) and compounds to polish brass. I just happen to have one of these tucked away, along with various polishing compounds. Anyone offer this new brass chassis builder any advice on this? John W.

I have not used a rock tumbler, but I do use a vibratory unit designed for re-loading. I use corn cob media, and it does a nice job.

I use the shell polisher, too, but I use walnut hulls with a squirt of Brasso.

Correction- I just looked at the bag it came in and I use ground corn cob with a squirt of Brasso. I have a bag of the walnut hulls but haven't ever opened it.

Do you do this just for looks? Ive been painting my chassis....

I have a rock tumbler, and I use ceramic media and water with a squirt of dish soap. It works great.

John, I could have an hour ago! I just painted the one that spent the night in the vibrator. I will get a picture of the machine though.

I just use a dremel and wire brush, and a bit of care when soldering.

If Bob's is significant;y different from mine, I'll add that photo to the post. I have a photo of an old chassis experiment from some time ago, fresh from the polisher and I can see if I kept it.

Mostly, it just gives me a good surface for degreasing and priming to paint. I don't do it to make it look good, but I always get a twinge when I do the primer, because it really does look nice when it comes out. One of these days, I'll shoot pre-cat lacquer on one and see if it looks good.

This is what I use, nothing fancy, can be bought at any sporting goods store or on-line for around $80.
Works great on any metal surface that you want cleaned and polished.

That's the same Frankford that I had, it was a lot quieter than my lyman, but it didn't last long. I was using it to clean 800 casings a week. I had it about three months. had a much better price too! If I had to buy a new one for just chassis, that's the unit I would get.
