The way solvent based acrylics work is to "melt" the surface of the layer beneath a little for bonding. So you need to build a protective layer up with the mist coats that will leave the colour and decal layers undisturbed.

Im probably going to confuse things but Ive had no luck with Pattos decals & Tamiya Clear ts13. Ive tried all sorts of methods trying to use tamiya clear over pattos, mist coats, coating in future etc, even waited days. It wrinkes every time when you hit it with a heavy coat. I won't ever use Tamiya clear over pattos again. Its only Pattos decals that I have issues with. Any alps printed decals, cartograf decals etc are all fine with tamiya clear, no problems. Ive got a can of White Knight Acrylic clear here that Im going to trial soon. So fingers crossed on that one.

It hurts me to say as I really like Tamiya paints but unfortunately if using Pattos its best to avoid Tamiya clear. Just my take.

Hmmmmm, that doesn't sound particularly promising. I'll be using decals from Thompson (studioRS); I'm not sure how they perform vs. Pattos decals when it comes to clearing them(?)

Does anyone have any experience with Testers clear lacquer? That's another option if the Tamiya is going to be just too hot for the decals.
