First try at brass chassis

Postby silverspringsslotcars » Sun Jan 18, 2015 6:17 pm

The BRE Datsun 510 was my first try at building a brass chassis. The body is a 1/25 Revell model of the BRE Datsun 510 Trans Am car.

The inserts are the plastic wheels from the kit. The paint is Testors enamel.

The chassis is made using Slot.its Boxer inline motor pod. The main rails are 1/16" brass rod. The brass plates are .062" thick brass sheet (yes it is heavy). The pans are .032 brass sheet. Since the pictures were taken it has been lightened quite a bit. The wheels are slot.it 17x10 and the tires are PG 221005SE. Closest I could come to the correct size. Guide is TSRF. Geared 9/27. The front axle tube is 1/8" brass tubing. Good thing I used the Boxer motor as it is quite heavy (150 grams). It handles pretty good with the skinny tires.

This is my second try at soldering a brass chassis. The body is one that has seen better days (old Scaley Mini). The task was to build a chassis that allowed the wheels to fit inside the body. The pans stick out a bit but the body rests on them. The rails are 1/16" brass rod. The pans are .032" brass sheet. Bracket is Professor Motor forged with oilites. Wheels are Slot.it 16.5x8, with yellow dog rear and slot.it fronts. Guide is PM. Geared 9/27. Moor shown is Slot.it 19.5k. It has since been changed to the Monogram motor out of my Lola T70. In testing the chassis with the Monogram motor the times were on par with my Slot.it Porsche 962 which is 8 seconds around a twisty 69 ft. track. Theses two chassis are the two tries at soldering brass. I soldered many an electrical circuit as technician and engineer but not brass.

Next is to try building a sidewinder and working on body mounts.

Joseph, both chassis came out looking nice! And you'll only get better at it as you build more. It's fun to be able to drive a car you've built yourself. Do you use a chassis jig when you build your chassis? If I had to pick my favorite, it'd be your Mini, only because I have both 1/32 & 1/24 Mini vac bodies to build up. I look forward to seeing your future builds.

I use a ceramic plate. My biggest problem is that I shake; scares the heck out of people when they see me solder. The Datsun is quick in a straight line, but a little tippy around corners. It is just a little slower than the Mini overall. I have two clear bodies that are approx. 40 years old that someone gave me. One is a Watson roadster and the other is a 30's Miller Indy car. Paint should be interesting. So we shall see sometime in the future.
