Monkey Wrench Invitational - Good times!!!

Postby TuscoTodd » Sun Jan 18, 2015 9:05 am

I had the honor of being invited to fellow HRW member gonegonzo (Tom Delauder)'s home for an invitational race yesterday with racing on two of the three portable tracks that make up "Monkey Wrench Speedways" - to say that it was a good time would be an understatement!

After a an early afternoon "track opening" followed by a bit of practice action, we were all treated to some very tasty homemade chili and corn bread served up by Tom and his wife before diving into the racing action! :D

The evening's racing kicked off on the Monkey Wrench 4-lane road course:

Image

The first class was stock T-Jet Tran-Am (using the original stock skinny rear tires).
Action in this class was outstanding! There was a lot of great door to door / cat and mouse type racing while everyone tried to keep the balance between smooth power application / drifting while not loosing any time to the competition! :)
After 3 minutes in each of the four lanes, it was track owner and host Tom DeLauder (gonegonzo) that grabbed the podium gold with his '63 Vette! This was followed by John Egan and his '67 Vette locking up silver, and my '67 Camaro in for the bronze. Nipping at the heals of the podium finishers were Dave Wilson's '70 Camaro, Bob Young's '63 Vette and Sumpy Stone's "Gray Ghost" '64 Pontiac. :banana-dance:

Unfortunately, I didn't think to start snapping pictures until this race concluded - but did get a shot of the field in finishing order :)

(I also have a video and as soon as I can get it uploaded will link it here as well)

Image

Next up was Super Stock T-jet "Muscle Car" action - also on the Monkey Wrench 4-lane road course!

Image

For this class - it was Dave Wilson's '68 Chevelle that was the car to beat - it charged to the front of the pack and staying there flag to flag netting podium gold! John Egan used his '71 Challenger to claim his second silver of the evening with Bob Young and his '71 Challenger coming in with a strong third place finish to lock up the bronze! The balance of the field was finished out with my '66 Nova, Tom DeLauder (gonegonzo)'s '71 Challenger and Stumpy Stone's '67 Chevelle. (again some great door to door action with some VERY close racing mid pack!)

Here is the finishing order - followed by a couple shots from the action!

After the Super Stock "Muscle Cars" - it was a time for a switch to the Monkey Wrench 6-lane oval for "Modified" racing action!

Image
(sorry for the slightly out of focus picture)

The racing here was all crash and burn style using 10 lap heats via AF/X lap counters. :D
The "Modified" class utilized AutoWorld chassis with weighted fronts and slip on rears being the only mods allowed.

This class offered action, action and more action! With bumping, banging and drifting all being "tools of the trade" for the run to the front, the "crash and burn" action was definitely running full tilt! :D

When all the fires were extinguished - it was the "new guy" with the loaned body that actually took top honors with the gold, followed by Bob Young with the silver and Tom DeLauder with the bronze. Finishing out the field was John Egan in fourth, Stumpy Stone in fifth and Dave Wilson in sixth.

Next up was another round of crash and burn on the 6-lane oval, this time mixing in some "Fairground Stockers" into the ranks. The action was just as entertaining - with lots of pushing, drifting, bumping and banging! :)

When it all shook out, it was Dave Wilson with the gold, the "new guy with the borrowed body" in for silver and John Egan locking up the bronze. Stumpy Stone's very cool Stude claimed fourth, Bob Young fifth and Tom DeLauder sixth.

I love the use of the old afx lap counters on his one track. Great idea.....

I love the t-jets also. My favorite field of cars!

Great looking line ups of cars too.

I dig they old coupes and modifieds.

Todd,

Your racing rig line up looked great also!

The video you provided of the racing was awesome! Crazy but awesome!

Just genius on your part for racing the rigs like this!!!!

Thank you again for the rigs you provided me and turning me onto racing the rigs.

I would of never known how fun this was running around my track but they are a blast.

I didn't realize these rigs could go around the tight curves on my 4 lane road course but they do and run great!

I love those cab over looking rigs also. might have to pick up a few more eventually.

Thanks again my friend!!!!

Good stuff guys!

Bob at BADLHOBBY in Middleburg Heights should have his new store front open soon with all his large tracks functional I would expect?

I hope to do a lot of the same racing there as you guys have been doing lately.

The stock t-jets are the best to race along with being turned on to the racing rigs by Todd which are a blast to race!

Thank you again for all the pics! I love to look at them for ideas.

Tom's tracks are great inspiration for my next 4 lane oval hollow core door build....

:D :D :text-thankyouyellow:
