Question on Primering

I know the concept of spraying a primer to improve adhesion and provide a consistent base. I notice that in some pics people have shown of their primered vehicles, I often see that they have sanded down the primered body to the point that in some spots the car body is visible again with no primer. At this point is primer sprayed on the car again or is the paint process continued with the main color even though spots of the car body have no primer (having been sanded off).

I am doing an article talking about this very thing.

But yes, after the first primer I wet sand. Some parts of the car shows through.

Then I spray again. Finally I wet sand with 2000 grit. Now it's ready for paint.

Least this is how I do it.

Additionally, try to rough up the body you are painting BEFORE you prime. That gives the primer something to bite into. I use 0000 steel wool on all of my projects I paint.

As for the sanding, you will never have a uniform "color" pattern after wetsanding. You will go through the primer in spots. Again, you're "leveling" the surface for paint.

A paint booth is a great tool, if you dont have one build one, they are very cheap to do and several have been built and are in a thread
I like mine more for the heat that comes off the 150 Watt light I use.

I clean the car like ShotGun says then put my body and the paint im using in the spray booth to warm up, paint dries fast

i wont give any advise on painting in general as i suck at it and am still learning however here is my thread on building a paint booth. it worked for me. ive painted two cars without it and one with it..... the one with it turned out great!..... well great to me lol

As well as offering a better bond for paint the primer does a few other things too.

It offers a blockout layer so that the underlying surface colour will not affect the colour coat.

Always a good idea to use a primer suitable for the colour you intend to use as most paints are not truly opaque. Don't use grey or black primer if painting yellow, it will finish up looking green. The primer choice can also enhance the colour coat. A red shot over a black primer will look richer and deeper. The same colour over a white primer will look brighter with a tendency toward orange or pink.

It also allows surface sanding so that the body can be made as perfect as possible prior to paint.

A lot of the time I use paints that can not be sanded, so the finish on the primed surface is vital. once paint is applied I need to clear coat to relevel and protect prior to sanding again.
