Area 51 24 Hour Endurance Race (Semi-Live Coverage)

Five (5) teams will be competing in a 24 Hour Endurance Race at Area 51 Raceway in Connecticut Nov. 7 - 9th. The teams are as follows:

Cloverleaf Racing (Michigan)
Team Quebec (Quebec, Canada)
Changing Gearz (Massachusetts)
H.O.S.T. (New Hampshire)
Shoreline Model Raceways (Connecticut)

We''ll be racing Group C cars with lights (part of the race is run in near darkness - just track lighting). Area 51 Raceway is a 5-lane layout. The race will consist of 6 complete rotations through all 5 lanes by each team (30 heats in total). Each heat is 48 minutes long. A given racer for each team will race an entire 48 minute heat - driver changes within a heat are not allowed.

We'll be posting here throughout the event with pictures and commentary. There may be some delays posting updates if we're actually racing. Regardless of who wins, if this event is like the previous one's (2009, 2013), everyone should have a good time.

Are we going to be issuing penalties for those drivers who "spear" other drivers? How about drivers who yells at corner marshals? How about penalties for people who just talk too much?

I picked up three team mates at the bus stop - we are foiled up and ready to go. Looking forward to meeting Dave K also!

Area 51 now has lights for night time racing. When you try to run slot cars with lights in total darkness you can't see enough of the track to drive very fast and there is also a problem when several cars are running close together. Some sort of subdued room or track lighting is needed. The lights at Area 51 are strips of red LEDs that illuminate the corners and braking zones. The lights have been installed so that they are not directly visible to the drivers, but are quite obvious when viewed by corner marshals. The lights are connected to a variable power supply so the level can be controlled.



I could not get a shot from the driver's point of view, my camera will not focus in the dark. This shot is as close as I could get.



We ran a mini enduro and found that this worked very well. There was one spot where a little more light was needed at the exit of a turn. If I recall correctly the times for the segments run in the dark were often as good or even better than those run with the room lights on.
