Advice here looks a bit Carrera centric. I would advise that you check out Scalextric too. If I were buying digital, Scalextric would probably be the system that I would choose. Both are good systems but I think Scalextrix has more user experimentation and cottage industry support. That makes Scaley a wee bit closer to the spirit of DCC though it still falls far short in practice when compared to trains. Choice might also come down to what region you live in if you want to race with others. Here in NW California where I live there is a pretty solid group of Scalextric digital club racers around the San Francisco Bay Area. Your region might be different.
In your research, you will also find Ninco and SCX digital systems. They run a distant third and fourth in advisability. I think Ninco is less popular and offers less in terms options in their system. SCX is highly brand centric in physical function of the lane change system making their system highly unadaptable to other brand's equipment. SCX is also coming out of bankruptcy under new ownership and is currently in a high state of flux.
