Over the past few years, our Electron Raceway group has focused on “True Scale hard body†racing utilizing the Scholer or Plafit chassis, plastic bodies and scale wheels. Depending upon the class, power plants are either the Deathstars or Falcon 7s. Our “Gran Sport†class is in the early stages of development. It features endurance machines that dominated during the 1960s and early 1970s like the Porsche 917, Porsche Carrera 6, Ford GT40, Ferrari 330 P4 and Ferrari 512. This is my second build for this class. Recently I finished a Gulf/Wyer 917.
Over the years I have built and destroyed my share of GT40s. About ten years ago, I recall running a GT40 Mark II with a Gulf Wyer paint job on the Blue King track at Cruzin’ Hobbies Plus in Chandler Arizona. The car sported a Hanna rattle chassis with large scale wheels front and back. The look was awesome compared to the squashed Lexan thingies that most people were racing. When a young boy of about 12 hooked up his controller next to mine, I failed to recognize it as a dangerous situation. Like most youngsters, he was unconcerned with others on the track. My beautiful GT40 was “nerfed†off in the doughnut and was sent flying off the track onto the floor – a total loss. Thankfully, the chassis sustained no damage and I had another body in reserve but was smart enough not to use it that day. An image of the car in its present well-worn form is also shown below
