I had so much fun building the first one, I thought I would do another for a body I had been wanting to build for a while. This one uses the 18mm gear, and a tri-tube set up for the rear. The axle runs close to the motor, but there is enough room to make it work. This design is so easy, I cant believe I had not done one before this! The finished chassis with pans, weigh's in at 80gr. Not a bad race weight if I can keep the body weight down a bit. this pic is before the side rail are cut down, and any cross supports soldered in. If you have not tried one like this, I highly recommend it. It can even be done without soldering just like the old Kemtron chassis. The side rails could be bolted together instead of soldered. Looks very good! Body should come in at around 20g, so that would put you all-up around 100g. But, if you can cut the side rails down, you might be able to save some weight there.

Allan, That 80gr was for the cut down chassis in the pic, with body mount pans. I have not weighed the second one yet, but it should be very close.
Still should come in around 100gr with body, inserts and such.

That is great! I definitely have sidewinderitis now - so will be ordering up pieces parts from SCC to fill in what I need in the way of gears, hopefully later today!
What diameter have you guys been using to clear the FC130 motors? (18mm ok - or are you guys using the 19mm?)

Todd, I have used both the 18 and 19 mm gears. The 18 was tight, but do able. Have not track tested the 18 mm version yet as far as performance goes. I wanted to do the second one with the smaller gear to see if I could accommodate smaller diameter tires.

Thanks for the info! I think, since I was planning on going with 21mm tires, I will play it safe a go with the 19mm to give me a little "fudge factor" room since this is my first attempt at one of these. :)

Using the Slot.it axles that have a reduced diameter in between the bearing locations also helps with clearance when 18mm gears are used.

Agree, I used them a lot with SW configurations, because not everyone's S-can motor has the same dimensions.................. ;)

Thank you for the additional thoughts guys! I hadn't thought about the 7.5mm pinion option(or the reduced diameter axles) - that might be a good way to go. Both the side winder builds I am planning are for the Ford v. Ferrari proxy and they are going to be seeing a good number of tracks and while I have never had an issue with tire wear with the Paul Gauge PGT compound tires I have used in prior proxies, it never hurts to error on the side of caution. :)
