Thats the very first batch of cars that Pioneer put out. Where did you find it? It has the small P motor in it. The later ones have a large P in the middle of the can, about 150gcm of torque compared to 130gcm. Fit he later optional 13T pinion instaed of the 12T and the car will get up and go. Will out do a scaly with the 13T. With the later motor its no contest.


From memory the blue helmet driver was the rarest. I think red was the most common.

Yep. Everything you could ever know about these cars was written up right here on HRW years ago. Probably more detail and clarity than anywhere including the Pioneer website. Just use the search function and you'll have hours and hours of reading in front of you, including modifications and tunings.

One bit of advice: put a good coat of "Future" (or suitable sub) on it if you want the graphics to survive........ask me how I know!

Yep. Another good one in the advice dept. They aren't delicate at all, but... They just really are fun to run hard and they tend to hit hard when you mess up! Of course, when these were new, they didn't cost a fortune, so we raced them like slot cars and bought lots of them. Now Pioneer has decided to go to $60-$70 each with virtually no US inflation to blame it on, I predict they won't be nearly as much fun to run. More risk of investment in toys kills a lot of the fun, eh? But the black and gold, and the gold and black reverse were among the best looking for me. My favorite was that gorgeous red with a black hood and gold accents. Just writing this makes me want to go run the everything in Pioneer box for old times' sake.

I always found the oiling hole a bit of a gimmic. If memeory serves me correctly this was a big issue for Jules at one stage. Instructions were that the oiling hole was drilled first and then the 3/32" through hole was drilled second. Do it the other way around and the oiling hole when drilled leaves a burr on the inside. Bearings were then a super tight fit because of the burr and axles wouldnt rotate. No matter how many times the procedure was stressed to the engineering company large batches were being produced with burrs. I suspect Jules eventually gave up and went with no oiling holes.

As far as a loose fit? Hmm cant help on that front.
