Mako Shark II

Postby RichD » Wed Mar 05, 2014 2:36 pm

I got this nice Mako Shark II resin body a couple of weeks ago, the 1:1 car has always been my favorite show car. It is not quite finished but this is what I have so far. I used a narrowed Artin NASCAR chassis with a Slot.it teal motor and gears. The wheels are CB Design. I had a nice Mr. Blobbyhead driver all lined up for the interior, but he was just too tall, so I had to go with a vacuum formed tray interior. I want to add some front grill work, a chin spoiler and side pipes. Right now the car weighs just under 3 ounces and there is some lead on the bottom. I will take the car for a spin before tonights' race.

I remember seeing the Mako Shark on the Chevrolet stand at the Chicago Auto show, and thinking " i wish
Chevy would bring that car into production". A few years later, many of the styling cues from the Mako showed
up on the '68 Vette. I worked at a local Chevy dealer back then and they had 10 orders for them immediately
after the first pictures of the new car were released.

There's a guy here in town who owns one of the 4 "short tail" Makos. I never heard of them until he gave me a picture of his car on the back of his business card. I looked and found his car on one of the archival Mako web pages. There's a real subculture on these things.

I may be banned from their site, but I have to say, I like your paint job better than some of theirs!

What an interesting car.
I must be honest, I'd never heard of the Mako or Mako 2 until now.

After having a look at this build, I had to go to google and have a look. Seems there was also a Manta Ray built later. All very cool looking concept cars and it's pretty obvious where later on the Stingray took it's styling cues from.

Thanks for showing us this car, You've done an awesome job.
Any hints on what blue that might be?

That is one coat of Testors 1836 De Ja Blue over 1244 Gold. Two Mako Shark IIs were built. The more radical looking one with side pipes was for static display only. The running version was later re-bodied as the Manta Ray.

Always raise my head up for the unusual, and this sure fits the bill!!

Color combo makes it look like moving while its standing still!!
