I've seen ads at Hobbylinv for AMT slot car kits for about $32.00. I'm wondering - bargain or not.
Any opinions / experiences gladly accepted.

OH Hobbylinc...I thought you meant Ollies.
$32? I would pass. The rest is like a Fly chassis. It will work, just rebuild it. IMHO, scrap the gear...slice and dice the chassis and add quality parts.
Mark Thomas has made some great running cars from them by being creative.

Drat! Foiled again! Closest Ollie's is about 4 hours away. With my luck they'd be sold out just before I got there.

A few specs that I found with these AMT kits:
The axles are a bit smaller than 1/8"
The chassis sits about 1/8" off the track
The motor tachs at about 22K RPM at 12 volts

There are, I believe, 8 cars in the whole line. 4 of them usually come with aluminum set screw wheels, set screw spacers and a set screw crown: 66 Olds 442, 71 Charger, 61 Galaxie, and 62 Catalina. The other four cars usually come with press on plastic wheels and knurled axles: 57 Chevy, 66 Nova, 70 Camaro, 66 Camaro. If the kit has silver wheels, they should be aluminum. If the wheels are black, they are probably plastic. The axles are 3mm, the same size as Scalextric Sport.
Note that Ollies is also having a big sale on 1/25 scale car model kits, for 8 bucks. Most of those will fit the chassis, and provide you with many more potential cars.

Can someone provide a link to a replacement crown gear? I read the review and it says to replace it, but I have no idea what to use in its place.
Thanks.
