An announcement appeared on Slot Car Today that Carrera has purchased the slot car brand names formerly owned by Technitoys. This includes SCX and the Scalextric name for the Spanish market.

The slot business had supposedly been passed to another toy manufacturer when Technitoys parent company went into liquidation last year. But further troubles ensued with legal questions over ownership of the brands. The natural assumption was that Hornby/Scalextric were trying to reacquire their Scalextric name for the Spanish market.

Surely this purchase makes Carrera the most powerful name in slot cars worldwide.

Mr Kennedy, are you able to confirm or deny? And what does it mean for the SCX cars that some of us have grown to love?

I went searching on the forum and couldn't find anything. My mobile coverage is kind of dodgy currently. Doesn't pay to be out of touch for too long...

It's still being finalized in court, but looks like that is how it is going to happen though......

As far as branding goes.....
My guess is that it will only apply to those markets where SCX sold under the name Scalextric....

It was confusing enough when SCX were Scalextric in Spain and SCX elsewhere. Now that it's Carrera that's Scalex in Spain.... What of SCX is my concern. I love my SCX classic rally cars.

At the moment all I can say is to stay tuned... sorry, not very satisfying I know.

Why in heaven's name would Carrera want to own the name Scalextric in Spain? Especially when most of the world thinks of Scalextric being that British company. Wonders never cease.

I'm of the opinion that it won't effect the current corp of the 132 rally and classic cars that SCX offers, but my main concern is the compact cars will be gone and I like that they have a flag guide instead of the pin guide like carrera has cause the flag guide IMO rides the slot better then the pin type and the pin type doesn't work well on wood.
If I was on the advisory broad for Carrera I would suggest to sell the Scalextric Spanish brand name to the Hornby/Saclextric company they always wanted their name in Spain.
And keep the compact chassie and some of the current cars and advise them to do away with the pin guide if it wouldn't add to the current retail price for their 143s and only get rid of Doubles of cars that are produced by both companies for both scales after a comparison of which ones looks better in detail.

Yep, speculating won't get us anywhere, but it's fun to play the "what happens now" game. :)

On the name trading side of things.... If Scaled couldn't afford to buy their name back direct from the Liquidator, I'm sure it is less likely that they'll be able to afford to do so with the added interest by Carrera.

Hornby have already decreased the manufacturing numbers of this year's range and are supposedly manufacturing to pre-order figures only. There is also manufacturing issues in China they have to contend with.

This sort of intrigue almost makes me miss working in mergers and acquisitions.

Elsecundo that would only possible if Carrera bought all of scx and not bits and pieces of scx and how they would bargain for a price that would be agreeable for both parties involved.

I like to speculate about things such as this just to see if I come close to what will actually happen.
