Carrera DeTomaso and Ferrari 512BB

Does anyone own one of these cars? Id dearly like to see the bottom of the chassis and a shot with the body off. Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. Wow they really are jam packed with "extra" stuff. Trying to decide on a car for our historic GT racing class.

What do these puppies weigh in at? 100g plus??

I haven't looked into it yet, but I have long felt that the wheelbase and track combination in the Pantera could make a fantastic stance for a full-on race slot car. You could get a huge amount of traction, and with a nearly square stance, it could corner like it was on rails. I'm so sure of it, I have been looking for a used one to hack into.

The BB's actually run like stink out of the box, which surprised me. They a real a blast to run, and they have really good lights for racing in the dark. Its just about worth it to rig your track for standing lights just to get to see a race with a couple of BB's in it.

I would go for the 512 - and the newer one eg NART #64 in preference over the older style chassis

I have sanded the edges to allow a bit of body float

It weighs 104g - I am pretty sure I have some lead in it

Dangermouse, do you get enough float with that tiny bit of clearance? I have seen several of your builds and I respect your skills. But that just looks like a minuscule amount of clearance between the body and chassis.

Its ok - but it is a work in progress :) I find with Carrera cars first thing to do is remove any snag points on the chassis that rub against the body - they have lots of extra bits on the chassis. I then gradually shave away from around the edges. There isn't a lot on the side sills off this one be the next area I hit but the ~1 mm or so is enough around the front and back.

I have two of these and haven't raced this one yet ... on my other car I have a bit more clearance all round I have also put two pieces of lead (probably about 5g total) on either side of the little switch - seems to balance the car out nicely.

I have two of the Carrera 599xx onone I took about 2mm all the way around and lowered it and the other I just removed the internal snag points, sanded the edges and lowered it, they both drive about the same - fun to experiment and see what works and doesn't

They do make for some fun IROC races in the dark. They run well with the Carrera 935's too. The Pantera does corner very flat Rob and if it wasn't for it's weight, might run a little better. Paul does make tires for them and I have his tires on all of my Carrera cars from this era and the tires/cars work very well on the wood.

Hello David, Thanks for the response. I too have worked on the 599xx and took about 2mm off the sides - all the way to the chassis sills, as you said. Indeed, it is great fun and very interesting to see how different people prepare their cars for racing. It would be a boring world (1/32 or 1/1) if everyone was doing the same thing.
