Cheetah build 3

Was ready to mount my Toyota S800 Spyder body to the newly constructed chassis with the Winpod motor mount from Shapeways but had a change in direction. Noticed one of my Cheetah resin bodies (based on the Strombrecker) in the parts bin and was reminded that I've wanted to build another for awhile.

Well, the chassis's an adjust-o-wheelbase one so it's easy enough to change bodies.

Trimmed the wheel arch flash and test fitted the body.

Love that slinky look.

That's looking fine, Dan. The Cheetah body style begs to be rodded.

Those huge tires look great. What wheel/tire combination are you using?

@ Rleog - My favorite combination for small car builds - Front wheels\tires: Slot It 14mm plastic\Slot It 312 urethane copies. Rear wheels\tires: Slot It F1/Fly March urethane copies. A bit of an exaggeration but it works for me.

Body's mounted now, single post, front and rear.

Will true tires and lightly file wheel arches to eliminate any rubbing.

Looks good next to Cheetah build 2 which is worse for wear after two years.

Exhaust pipes to fill the side void were made from 1/8" and 5/32" brass tubing. Just need some solder to imitate headers.

Good progress.

Exhaust pipes soldered onto chassis side pans but more inboard than on my Cheetah build 2.

Body's been trimmed to a svelte 8 grams.

Rear tires trued and with a mounting post soft spacer, they just clear the wheel arches.

Ready for power now.

Who says slot car building is a winter sport! Or is it still winter in Canadia? 8-) It's too darn hot in the lower 48, so until the sea breeze kicks in, indoor Fourth of July :flags-waveusa: :flags-waveusa: :flags-waveusa:

Dan - That soldering and chassis looks super sano. How do you clean it up after soldering? Glad to see that you are putting our friend Brain's Shapeways WinPods to good use.

Alright, back to DanJim shipping duty...

@ JT - the recommendation to use Lucky Bob's acid flux has made all the difference in getting cleaner solder joints. Any excess is just filed off and sanded with a 1500 grit stick.

Installed a Scalextric Sport slimline 25K green motor though I'd prefer the 21K red one which is pretty hard to find these days. Gears are a BWA 9t pinion (another NLA) with a Slot It 27t crown for a 3.0:1 gear ratio.

Test ran it against my older Cheetah build 2 on my twisty 3-laner and was pleasantly surprised.

Image

Got a fastest lap of 5.662 seconds vs. 6.213. That's significantly quicker but you've got to consider the lighter weight (70g vs. 83g), higher rpm motor (25K vs. 21K) and freshly sanded and trued tires.

Ran a stock Slot It Mazda 787 run right after and best I could do was 5.922 seconds. Really good outcome to better a Slot It car.

Onto some modeling detail.

Still deciding on a final body color, but it'll have to complement modified gold Slot It Ford GT40 wheel inserts.

Leaning towards Tamiya light red pearl.

Body detail parts (engine intake manifold, tail lights, gas filler cap, driver figure) painted and test fitted. Driver's helmet had to be filed down to fit.

Image

Spraying body with Tamiya TS-59 Pearl Light Red that'll complement the gold finish wheel inserts.

Slow progress during this lazy summer.

A unique project to be proud of, and likely a very quick runner.
