Bugeye Sprite build 8

Got on to another project that's been sitting around for awhile. This flared Bugeye body has been waiting for a chassis so I put together an adjustable wheelbase one, this time using the no longer available BWA motor bracket. The wheels are also history, custom machined ones from Ranch Design with BWA Halibrand wheel inserts.



Just waiting for a Scalextric slimline 20K red motor and Scale Auto universal guide in the mail.

Should be running soon.

Dan, that is serious meat on the rear end, so while you are waiting might as well solder on the side pans. I see another 7 second Sprite coming along, eh?

I can't remember if you have shown it before, but can you show how you make the guide holder? That's a clean design.

@ retro racer - Yeah, need those fat rear tires and wide track on these small cars to keep up with the stock Slot Its, my goal on these builds. Need to narrow the stock 1/2" .063 brass strip to 3\8" to fit.



@ dreinecke - Fabricate guide tongues from .063 brass strip in different widths depending on the motor bracket used. Two holes drilled, a 5/64" for a guide post and 3/32" for body mounting post. Soldered in between the mail rails which are usually 3/32" square for small cars and 1\8" for large.



Solder in 3/32" square as mounting pads for the 1/8" square axle tube. Round 5/32" is used for guide post and carefully bored out with 9/64" bit to accept Scale Auto and Sloting Plus universal guides.





Mock fit the body and it's going to work.







Think I'll do some side pipes to emphasize a V8 look.

If I need a 3/8" strip I cut a 3/4" down the middle. Saves brass, as the little thin piece cut off a 1/2" strip would be next to useless. Too bad K&S don't sell 3/8".

Made side pipes from 1/8" tube and 3/32" tube and rod. Soldered to the edge of the side pans.



Test fitted and fills the sills well.

Motor arrived in the post, so the chassis's finished.





The V8 look with side pipes works for me.





Runs with a nice solid and planted feel like my other fat Bugeyes.

Another excellent build: you are clearly the "small, wide" car master! OK, make that the "small, wide, FASSSSTTTT!!!" car master!

I am curious Dan: what tyres are those on the back? The closest I could think of that are that wide would be Fly Porsche 935 or maybe Carrera Porsche 917/30

The rear tires are urethane copies of the rears used on the Scalextric F1 McLaren M23 and Ferrari 312.
Steve at Ranch Design, custom made aluminum rims to my specs, identical to the original plastic rear rim's dimensions.

My performance aim with small car builds is to keep up with Slot It cars, so having wide rear tires helps the cause.

Unfortunately, Steve has wound down Ranch so now I use the slightly larger diameter Slot It F1 rims for my small cars with the tires trued down more. Interestingly, I've noticed that the new Thunderslot Lola T70's are equipped with similarly smaller diameter wheels.

If you are interested you can have the set or rear wheels of my Thunder Slot Lola: I have just replaced them with CB Design wheels. I can hand them to you the next time you are in town. Just note that the rib on the TS rims is very low....
